Oil Temperature on 12v71n's

What is the ideal operating oil temperature on 12v71n's?

When out fishing my Port engine shows an average of 190 degrees at 1000 to 1200 rpm and 210 degrees at 1700 rpm.

However the Starboard runs at 200 degrees at 1000 to 1200 rpm and what concerns me is that on the way back home, after 8 or 10 hours fishing, I will throttle up to 1700 rpm and as high as 2100 rpm for a short 5 minutes) and the temp rises quickly from 210 to 225 even 230.

Oil pressure are good.

Is it tramsmission Temp? I have manual gages in the engine room and i have transmission temp but no engine oil temp. I am kinda like Scott on this one i anit gotta them. However mine are 892.
What is the water temp doing I would belive it to be right along with oil temp or closs strange at best.

found out 300 degrese seem to be the majic number but each oil is diffrent by a small marjan

Is this OIL temperature or WATER temperature? If it's water temp, it sounds too high. If it's oil temp, it sounds okay- but I've never seen these engines instrumented for oil temperature.

(The only thing I've seen instrumented for oil temp is race cars, or high-performance sports cars, like a Ferrari I had years ago. I've never seen it on marine engines, although there's plenty in life I haven't seen. My Cobra has a setup for engine oil temp- the gauge is in there and it's wired in- but we've never put the sending unit into the oil pan to activate it.)

When I do engine checks under way I use a handheld infrared thermometer. I check water temp (180 F), oil temp (200 F) at the filter and transmission housing temp (200 F). They do not vary much with RPMs but I only run 1500 rpms on 6-71Ns. I also check each cylinder exhaust port on the manifold to make sure there are no slackers. All 12 run pretty close to the same temp within 10 degrees.

My concern would be the "spread" between the water and oil temp. The normal temp spread is usually 20-40 degrees. If you spread is more than that I would be looking at the oil cooler for restrictions.

This is the engine oil temp.
Water temp is good on both engines.

Swap sides with the gauges to see is it is a gauge difference although it could be the sender.

Went back out for a nine hour fish yesterday and temperatures remained the same. With the advice from you all, I have relaxed about the oil temps, just keeping an eye on all gauges as per usual.
BTW, had some good fish. I am posting photos on a new thread.

Kinda thought that was what you were looking at had to call your bluff sorry about that.
The gages in the engine room should be all mechanical. Get that boy of yours to hold her straight put on some shooting ear muffs. (earplugs) Turn her about 1900 go down jot the numbers on all gages including oil temp if you can find it. Go up on the bridge and compare. I will check my transmission tomorrow and tell you what it runs. Keep in nind the water temp around here now is about 54 to 58 so the engine water temp will be a little low. My water temp has been running 170 to 175 sence installing the wedges and doing away with the sea strainers. ( i belive the thermostats are 175 or there abouts so the thermostats are working.
I am thinking out loud now i do not belive i have seen the trans temp gages go to the 200 but do not get ancy yet let me check tomorrow. Let you know tomorrow or Monday night.

just remembered you aint got no transmission temp gages on the bridge if it is like mine. Like it was posted swap the wire or medal stran from one to the other and run her i feel like you got a gage or sending unit problem. One more is it the trans you had rebuilt?

The Port Transmission was rebuilt. This is the Starboard engine.

Both my sons are home at the moment. I'll get them to help. The eldest son, back from the Darwin for Christmas, is catching all the Marlin at the moment.

ANOTHER PAGE dock talk here and proof in the catch Blue fin tuna have shown up for the first time in about 3 to 4 years lot of menhadden in the ocean big pods. They are awsom not interested coast guard checking every body for equipment infractions and catch infractions. Sometime as much as 4 hours to land one 500 t0 700 pounds. Finds are tourble federal regs apply....

Was planning to go to Florida to chase the sail fish bite in Palm Beach but big numbers never showed up. So i passed. To ride that 52c down there and back for just a few fish was not worth the squeez. My luck after this comming front they will show up in grover still not going to far and not enuff fish for me to go.
Kinda jellous of you but my turn comming soon.

Checked with a local guy who also has Detroits (8v92) and like everyone else on HOF, he has no gauge for oil temp for the engines. I will check with the mechanic. I expect that both motors are running within the correct temp range.
