  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
For a while now I have been getting a drip on my valve cover on my starboard engine on the left hand side. It appears if oil is dripping out the front of the airbox and dripping onto the cover, and then dripping down. I have asked a couple of diesel mechanics about this, and no one seems to be able to give me a straight up answer of how to fix it and if it is a serious problemHopefully someone here will be able to give me some insight to this

There are drain tubes in the air box that should go to a catch can good chance their plugged with crap. Should be bleed air coming out of them with the engine running.

Looks like the front/right of the air silencer dripping oil on the valve cover.
The silencer may reduce some engine whine but mostly keeps fingers out of the supercharger (blower).
The engine crankcase vent hoses may hang on either end.

What I call the air box, is below the blower, in the valley between the cylinder banks.
This has slobber drains that rsmith may be referring to..
I do not think that applies to this issue.

Two ideas; Crank case vent spewing or blower tossing oil.

Sadly, I do not know any real Detroit guys in the Tampa area.

ThanksYes maybe wrong terminology used.Any ideas on cause and possible fix. It’s messy but any idea if it is it serious

Is there oil dripping out of the back (lower) corner of this silencer box?

The fuel pump looks clean and dry.
The forward blower end looks clean and dry.
The control rod passage from the governor to the head looks clean and dry.

If it is either of what I think, it is bad and not so bad.

I hope I'm wrong on excess crank case pressure.
Your picture does not show the case vent tube.

The front rotor seal flinging oil out of the blower and silencer.
You may smell the oil in the exhaust and see some blue in the exhaust also from this.
Then you just have the blower re-sealed.

These would be my only thoughts on how oil comes out of a silencer box.

You need to find a Detroit guy.

Wayne Hanaseck owns Anclote Diesel in Tarpon Springs. He is a DD 2 stroke guy and has some good techs that I hope remain in the trade. Highly recommend.👍

ThanksThere is nothing dripping out the back.I am heading to the keys so not to much chance of finding a mechanic that I know of.Planned on anchoring out and going to the tortugas.I did notice a little smoke out the exhaust yesterday while checking off the stern at the dinghy, so hopefully that.I have used Wayne from Anchlotte and he always seemed to busy to get to my small issues.Hopefully all is ok for now.

Do you have emergency shut down flappers under those silencers?
Been so long since I've been on a N, I can't remember.

There is a guy in Holiday they call Jimmy Diesel (James Dandurand). He did some work on my boat for previous owners. I don't know anything about him but here is the number off one of the invoices 727-643-7515. I was told he used to work for Detroit back in the day. The rates on the invoices appear reasonable but they are pre Covid

Hi, no there is shutdown in front of the silencers and that is open. Oil pressures seem right and I am adding about 1/2 gall of 40W every 150-200 miles so does not seem excessive.
It is just making a mess and I want to make sure I am not creating a problem down the road that can be solved before its to late

Thanks

Maybe I can call him and send him photos as we are in Marco Island waiting for a weather gap to get the key West.
