I changed oil and filters yesterday on my engines 6-71n. The port engine used 27 qts as everyone here told me, but the stbd engine I poured in 32 qts and the oil level did not reach the full mark on the dipstick. The oil level on the dipstick was between low and full. Why is this?? I used the port dipstick to check the stbd engine and I got the same with both dipsticks.

Strange..my 671 n's take a 5 gallon pail plus one qt. are yours on an angle or sit level ?

They have a little angle towards the back.

As I recall the dip sticks are of different lengths for each engine. Maybe one of yours was replaced with the wrong dip stick??

Maybe that's it. I'll take out the excess oil I added.

Wow...not a good idea, run her for quite a few hours and check stick level every 20 hrs or so see where it settle then mark the stick.....at next change see how much they hold and if close to the manual use that as your reference..

Mine take 6.5 gallons each with filter change. If I remove the oil filter hoses (did this when I replaced them), they take a full 7 gallons each.

Yeah, the stbd engine used 24 qts excluding the filter so I'll drain 8 qts from the port motor.
