Hatteras Model
56' MOTOR YACHT (1981 - 1984)
Getting ready to head south and want to change the oil in the 892 TI's. How much oil should I order for both engines and generator?

I can't find capacity info anywhere?

7 gallons each engine. Don't know what generator you have, but it most likely takes a different oil than the engines do.

I use straight 40 weight for engines. Filters are NAPA 1671. My Onan MDL4 (20 kw) takes 6 quarts of 15W-40. Filter is NAPA Gold 1592. Don't know if you have an Onan, but posted in case you do :)

I have always used the same oil for both engines and generator for 49 years now. Back in 1966 this was straight 30 wt. When DD changed their minds and went to straight 40 wt. the generator made the change too. Never had a problem. Of course being generally in the Bahamas or Florida I don't have to worry about low temperature starts. We did go to Nova Scotia one summer where it probably got down to around 40 degrees. Again, no problems.

Yep! The only oil back then was gulf HD 30

We have a 20kw Kohler that is actually a Perkins engine.

She took around 9 quarts of oil to get to the full mark.

We are using straight 40 wt in everything, which is what it calls for.

Are you all using the straight 40 in an Onan? It would be heck of a lot easier to keep only one weight on board! FYI my Onan manual does state straight 30 is fine as we stay south as well.

My 20kw Onan MDL4 manual calls for 15-40 so that's what I used. No big deal convenience wise as it is down in its own compartment and having a couple jugs of oil right there. A mechanic I trust said it would be fine to use straight 40, but I just figured, why out think the OEM. Plus 15-40 is available everywhere and cheaper than CF2 40w.

By the way, I used a NAPA 1602 filter on that.

George, is the different genny filter maybe due to using a NAPA Gold versus a NAPA "regular" one?
