  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1968 - 1975)
The PO painted over mine so I can’t get any data off it as to current draw, model numbers, nothing.

And…It’s mounted on a removable deck board (fuel hose access) that can’t be removed now because the pump is there (what was he thinking?). None of the piping is secured, no fuse and the on/off switch bit me (the toggle part of the switch was HOT).

As such, I need to relocate and rewire it. I’m thinking of bulkhead mounting it slightly above the level of the pan (1-2 feet). Generally speaking, what are the install requirements for these? Should they be installed below the pan, level with or can they be installed above the level of the pan? Can they be bulkhead mounted? Fuse rating?

I realize these requirements are pump specific. I’m just askin’ for ‘generals’ here. I gotta’ work with what I got…

If its one of those toy OEM pumps... FILE IT !! (IMHO). If you need to keep it theres a dozen things to consider. REVERSO units are ok for filling a waterbed, but even with the special oil resistant impeller you have to pump cold oil, never warm or hot. Keeping them primed for a 3 foot lift is a trick without burning the $10 un available impeller. The impellers always fail half way through the job too.
On the other hand a gear pump or vane pump (thats what chocolate factories use for moving semi warm fudge) at 110 vac and 1/2 horsepower pulls 15 gallons of cold oil out of my 12-71s in bout 30 minutes.I found mine on Ebay for $35. I also used it for pulling crud out of the fuel tank bottoms, plus you can rig a filter for polishing. A few drops of oil and connect the lines and the prime is set. Will no doubt lift 20 feet with fuel oil etc.
When I permanently plumb the unit, I will do it with 1/2" copper and valves, the small plastic tygon tubing is strictly for convenience right now for getting into dip stick tubes, and fuel tanks etc.
I have 4 reverso pumps that I would toss, but they are 32 volts and can still be used for wash down or water transfer. Dont get suckered into a 12 volt gear pump either; just not enough balls. If your good at making stuff, a 1/2 hp motor, a Lovejoy coupling, and a hydraulic log splitter pump mounted to a piece of plywood will treat you right. ws

Ours is the Reverso OP 6. Really it is the op4(I think) but like WS said you can not find them as they have been discontinued. Anyhow, the OP6 is not the end all to beat all either. I tore up a new impeller after 2 oil changes. We have 2 of these and I know enough to keep extra impellers now! If your motor is shot I would look in to a change of brands!!!!

Except for getting bit by the switch, the pump worked fine the last time I used it. The oil was hot and it seemed to pump quickly.

Like I said, I no nothing about the make, model, manufacturer or current requirements of this pump. All I know is that it is painted gray. I’ll post a pic tomorrow.

Sooo, keeping it primed might be an issue if I mount it above the oil pan?

yachtsmanbill how did you search for that pump on eBay? What was your key words? That's the kind of pump I'm looking for.
Thanks

I searched for gear pumps ,hydraulic pumps, vane pumps, chemical pumps and oil changing pumps in all categories. You can also try log splitter parts / pumps. Be patient as they come up periodically.
This one came from Soddy Daisy Tn. not too far from old freebirds stompin' grounds. Another place near here is www.groban.com for a lot of surplus stuff. He had an entire unit with a pump and manifold with SS piping and valves that the military had in an oil sample lab or something like that for $150 OBO. It was a dynamite unit, but I was in a cheap mood that day! He also has a ton of 24Vdc hydraulic pumps from mil surplus also. He runs a 2 page add in boats and harbors. ws

Here's the horror.

It currently sits about a foot above the level of the oil pan drain.

Any one know this type of pump?

I don't know the make of my pump right now. It does have a rubber impeller. I can check today. It's 12 volt and mounted above the motors. The copper pipe is 1/2in. and is manifolded through 3 valves to the 2 motors and the generator. The longest run is 5ft.. It will suck oil hot or cold. I just use the fill position to prime it. I have had no problems in 3 years. Oberdorffer ( maybe spelled wrong ) makes a great gear pump. I have one here at the house that I use.
