  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' COCKPIT MY (1990 - 1999)
Good afternoon,

I'm about to tackle my first 8V92TA and transmission (Twin Disc DD 5111V) oil/filter change on my still new to me 1991 Hatteras 52 CMY.

The engines appear to be straight-forward using the oil change pump installed. The transmissions are a bit more challenging. There is not a lot of room under the transmission to place a pan to catch the old oil. Seems like a pump through the dipstick opening would be difficult based on the size of the opening.

Any advice is welcomed and appreciated on how to best remove old oil and then replenish with new in the transmission.

I have 20+ gallons of Delo 100 40 on hand and the necessary filters.

Thanks and best regards.

Suction is about all you can do, initially. Maybe take advantage of empty gears and fix it for the future.

I have found that the 3/8" plastic sink water lines/tubes that they sell at Lowes/Home Depot fit perfectly down the dip stick hole on my DD Allison gears.

Cut to length and connected to your pump of choice using 3/8" poly tubing. You might have to heat the poly tubing to get it to fit over the rigid plastic tube. I've got a small hand pump from Harbor Freight that I use. Takes about 15 minutes to pump out the oil through the dip stick hole using this set-up.

FYI...when refilling make sure to read your service manual. For my gears, the oil level needs to be at the full mark on the stick with the engine running.

And possibly also at operating temp. My Allisons both that fer sure. Two things you can do to make life easier. 1: Go to the restaurant supply (or Amazon) and get a cheap large measuring cup. Carefully measure what you remove and replace with same. 2: Once you get the oil where it needs to be hot and running, let the engines cool and mark them cold...... Not perfect but a heck of a starting point. (Also for pre-departure checklist.)

On TD clutches; Put a hose on the dip stick tube and draw from there.
You will get 95% of the oil out.
Do this warm in the evening then draw again in the morning after the system drains more into the sump (like your engines).
TD's have a capacity stamp on their tags. Fill to just under this value and run at the dock cycling F-N-R-N a few times.
TD's are checked running, in neutral. Ad a very little at a time, till full.
Then, the next morning, take note of where the oil level is on the dip. That will be your non-running cold oil level check.

Use the same oil as the engine; CF-2, 40w.

My thanks to all for your guidance and recommendations. Guess I need to just get at it!

Provided some valuable insights to me as well. PO completed oil and filter change pre-survey on our 1986 54'. I have the oil change electric dipstick pump/bucket, but we haven't run very much since we're still addressing issues that cropped up during Okeechobee crossing after taking ownership. Thanks everyone!

No Robert, he was talking about a marine transmission. That’s clearly not a picture taken on a boat!

Okay so I’m obviously not the only person who now feels shame about my engine room.
