  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' LRC (1975 - 1981)
Anyone have any recommendations for good prices/quality on oil absorbent towels? Need them in bulk because....well....because I have Detroits. :)

I really have no experience with these - as the previous owner of Kismet left me a supply, which are about to run out.

Probably need a couple of 100 count cases.

I've searched Google and come up with the standard 3M type products, as well as the cheapo Northern Tool ones. Again, as stated above, I'm really looking for the best bang for the buck - they're obvioulsy disposable - but I'd prefer something that doesn't fall into a million pieces when I pull it out of the engine bilge.

Now that I've explained a simple question to death....Any Recommendations?
Thanks!

I know Sky answered the question but just as info - you really CAN make DDs essentially non leakers. I put a new oil absorbent pad under the engines several seasons ago and they are still essentially white.

I won't say I have made my DDs totally oil tight but at most they just seep a bit of oil that ends up being more of a film that, over a season, might end up as a couple drops of oil. Most of the DD leakage is caused by leaking fittings or warped mating surfaces of parts where one of them is thin and the other thick - like heat exchanger plates against the HE, stuff like that.

Tightening an assembly to make it stop leaking usually doesn't help and may make it worse because it just warps the fittings even more. But removing/truing the part involved and fitting a new gasket will usually fix the leak. As will good, appropriate thread sealant on threaded hose/sender, etc fittings (not teflon tape - like silicone, it's a tool of the devil!). ;)

Go to the Goodwill store and by a ton of terri cloth towels for a buck. Use them and toss them, or be a a$$hole like me and take them to the coin op laundry in a baad neighborhood. Wash in the "whites only" machine.
How apprepeaux! ws

Just don't try that (washing) at home; it's a mistake you will only make once!

Thanks Sky ... just ordered a roll of the 24" x 150'. My 6-71N's don't leak oil but like having just in case ... and always handy at oil change time!

I grew up around those Laundramats on the "wrong side" of the tracks. Momma took me there at least once a week.....and then I got bussed across town to the "whites only" school, something I never quite understood.

Never forget yer roots.....

Back on topic, thanks for the advice. Already ordered from "newpig".
Regarding the "drips", that's on the project list of things to do. Just seems that when I step on board each weekend that projects seem to manifest themselves! Hell, I can't even step onto the gunnel without noticing something to add to "The List"! :)
