This was a horrific accident that should not have happened!
A lift bridge operator who had taken drugs and alcohol led to a collision between the freighter Windoc and Bridge 11 on the Welland Canal, at Allanburg, Ont.
The bulk carrier hit the bridge on August 11, 2001, causing more than $10 million in damage. Traffic on the busy canal was paralysed for two days, and the lift bridge itself was out of service for three months. The Windoc caught fire and was damaged beyond repair.
The lift bridge operator was probably impaired, according to reports by the Transportation Safty Board.
He had been asked to work on a scheduled day off, and had finished two 12-hour shifts during the previous two days. Before being asked to work overtime that night, he took some pills to relieve back pain. He also had between two and four glasses of wine around lunch.
