  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
40' DOUBLE CABIN-Series I (1986 - 1989)
Anyone know anything about a 60' CC Roamer in Guntersville, Al. YW#59972-1886355? Also what are the pros and cons of an aluminum hull? Yachtsman Willie want to chime in on this. Was thinking of chucking the house and moving aboard. Yea I know, I'm nuts but the wife actually likes the idea. Would be in brackish water in New Bern, yea I know again, a Chris where Hatteri are built or should I say were built. Looks good on YW however Y'all know what that means. Any info on the Chris Roamer would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Hey there Labradoodle... where ya been??? ;-))
After owning both aluminum and glass boats, all I can say is that there ARE pros and cons with both. There's horror stories about Al Roamers going up on the rocks and merely scratching (gouging) the bottoms etc. Generally, they are built on about 20" centers with a material gage around .235". Thats pretty stout. Learning how and with what to weld them is a plus too, but not really required.
You WILL become friends with Nigel Calder tho !! Only one or two brands of bottom paint etc... I was looking for Roamers when I bought the HattTrick so it was a true case of apples and grapefruits... Q240Z can surely help out here too! ws

Aluminum and salt water don't mix. The aluminum boats I see have chronic corrosion under the paint and it never seems to end. Personally I would only consider a Roamer in fresh water. I am sure Dr Jim will tell of his woes with a Striker.

I thought there were past posts of whoes with Burger Al hulls and materials...esp. a concern since they are first rate boats.

Happen to know this boat- send us a PM we can fill you in on some of the details if you would find that helpful.

Yea Randy, thats the one alright. Looks real good on YW however as I said you never know. Looks like it escaped damage during that wind storm but just!!!

holtcl PM sent, thanks in advance

Sorry for some reason we didn't receive- I got an email that our volume was getting full but thought I had fixed it. I will double check that.

I could have screwed up too, Pm sent again.

Just some musings.... consider all the aluminum crewboats in the gulf...
Most of the al boats do have a corrosion problem under fittings and trim, but I feel thats old bedding technology... yes that is an issue but not a deal breaker. The bottoms do need some periodic attention AND sealing, but ive been using coal tar epoxy with good success. The thru-hulls are usually pipe welded in instead of a bronze seacoack.
The real issue is a strong bonding system with CALCULATED zinc amounts to produce correct ampacity as an anode. Even the steelies use MONEL pipe as thru-hulls.
Now, what about wood boats in fresh vs seawater... rot vs fastener wasting??? maybe we should patent a CORNINGWARE hull... Hmmm ws
