  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' MOTOR YACHT (1984 - 1987)
I have wasted three months trying to get my old 8kw MDKD going and now I'm over it!

I would love to buy a Northern Lights but they are over $13000.00 with sound shield and I can buy a Norpro or Phasor for around $9000.

I'm gonna order one tomorrow,.....which one??

They are both fine and may even have some similar parts in them. I would choose whoever answers the phone the best, will have the best service backup, and has a sound enclosure for their set- something I wish I had and can't get for my installation.

But have you looked in B&H for NL takeouts? Might be worth looking; also on Boatdiesel.com, you might well find something there.

Look on Boatdiesel. There is one ad with NEW 9kw Kohler, I think they are 9kW, for $6800. Could be the one for you. Some of our members have Kohlers, Karl had one, and loved it. Check it out.

Jim what is B&H?

My neighbor owns Phasor. He is a good guy.

B&H: Boats and Harbors, the yellow marine "newspaper"

A difficulty in picking the "ideal" generator is that you never know when a manufacturer changes suppliers, say for the engine, or the engine manufacturer changes it's supplier for some component and if so if it whether it will prove to be an improvement or a headache. And then maybe the manufacturer changes their own design ...with unintended consequences.

I put in the 9kw norpro 2 seasons ago. It's been flawless. I paid about $6500 for the unit and did my own install.

Bob did you go with a sound shield?

Is there a "neighbor" deal??

Joe from Sound Marine just called and bumped me $1950! Said he forgot to add for the sound shield.

Jack is this the same generator you were looking to buy last October? Are you interested in the Maspower I sent you the info on?

Mambeaux,
I put in my 9kw Norpro about a year half ago. About 500 hrs so far and have used it a lot on this cruising trip. Left the dock on April 1st. Now docked in Ft. McAllister in Richmon Hill area of Georgia. The Norpro has been flawless. I bought the sound shield with mine. Big difference in sound off the old Onan. Just plain love mine.

I did not, and it isn't terribly loud. I'm running a 1979 43C. I also have teak and holley sole without carpets. I'm sure it would be even quieter if I had carpeting. I feel that it is quieter without a shield than my Onan MDJE was with a shield.

BTW, I also got mine from Joe at Sound Diesel - and I picked it up myself at the East Haddam factory, as I live in CT. That saved me delivery fees. The guys at the factory were very accommodating and helpful.

I put a 12.5 Kw Phasor in a few years ago with sound shield. You can hardly tell it is running. About 2500 hours on it now. Not a single problem. Newage generator, Kubota diesel. All filters and belts readily available at NAPA Auto Parts. Plus they are nearby, in Pompano Beach, FL. They answer their phone and emails! (Onan please take note.) I checked out a number of generator companies at the Miami Boat Show and decided Phasor was for me based on this and reports from other owners.

Been very happy with the Phasor 15kw put in last year; no sound shield necessary.

Boats and Harbors. Also look on Boatdiesel.com, I think the Kohler gensets I saw were on that web site. Lots of commercial marine stuff there but also pleasure boaters like us.
