  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
My 43 DCFB does not have a windless or a bow pulpit. I would like to add one this winter. I have a NO.5 Danforth with 8 ft. of chain and 300 foot of 1 inch nylon line. Any ideas on model and size I need in a wingless. What do you think is the best unit. I don't think I know squat on this subject. I never had a boat with one. I don't want to add a giant pulpit or drill any giant holes in My deck. For now I just run the boat in fresh water but it could get into salt water in the future. The Hatteras fiberglass pulpit is to large.

you could use a nice stainless steel anchor chute robust enough for the loads that can be applied without having to add the standard fiberglass pulpit and steel anchor chute. You would probably have to have this made. The flimsy stuff I see available is not worth putting on your boat. I have seen too many of them mangled up. The anchor chute on a Hatteras is made with 316 stainless and is about 3/8ths inch thick with a stainless steel roller, instead of the flimsy rubber rollers you see on blow boats. I made my own from Hatteras drawings. If you can't find anywhere to get this done, let me know and I may be able to help you out. I would also recommend a real heavy duty windlass, you have to be careful with this because I personally think most of the recommendations based upon size ranges from the manufacturers do not recommend a large enough windlass for reality. Also, if you go with a 24 volt winch you can use smaller gauge feeder wire than if you use a 12 volt one. There are some horizontal winches that mount above deck so you won't have to make a large hole throught the deck, but you will have to make mount bolt holes and reinforce the deck from underneath. I have a Concept 2 windlass, you could probably use a Concept 1 with gypsy/drum combo or similiar rated windlass. The Galleymaid winches that Hatteras uses are monsters and expensive. There are several good winches for your size boat, just don't go too small, you will regret it. I would also recommend you add another 40 feet of chain to your setup.

Sams has a SS chute that is a fit for your vessel...see his parts site and enter chute as keyword. Tom Slane has the molds for a pulpit that will fit your craft.

The power needs of a windlass is a function of the ground tackle weight plus the mooring lines/chains. The windlass must have the capacity to lift the tackle plus the mooring lines...the power rating in weight is for no other purpose. I believe that a Maxwell (now std on Hatt's I believe) 1,200 VWC (rope gypsy plus chain wheel), would be adequate (1,200 #'s capacity). Again, compute the weight to be lifted and that becomes your requirement. Different chain wheels are avail depending on the chain you will use. Other posts recommend good ole' galvanized chain for all chain. 20-60' chain plus rope rode on other posts.

I do know that Hatt OEM is now all chain, but then their smallest craft was at least 50' a couple years ago.

my 2cw...

FWIW you might want to call the folks at ideal in R.I., they use to be the unit of choice on the earlier 53's. The people are very helpful and products seem to last.
