  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
38' DOUBLE CABIN (1967 - 1971)
I removed a 10 year old water heater on our Hatt last weekend and was working out the new mounting and piping layout last weekend. It occurred to me that the new unit (Seaward) is largely of aluminum construction including the water inlet and outlet. (1/2" Female NPT) Surprisingly, the manual makes no mention of electrolysis nor does it recommend any particular type of material for the necessary fittings. I'm leery of using nylon for this application. I suppose that a stainless nipple would be a way around the problem. Would brass be suitable here. I'm ultimately connecting to a nipple input and a flared copper on the output. Suggestions?

I replaced a hot water tank 9 years ago (Force ten) with the same materials you have. I used brass and copper fittings and have had no problems. There should be an anode in the tank also that you replace when needed.

Thanks. Good to hear the confirmation. Since I posted this, it occurred to me that there is a brass p/t valve already mounted directly into the aluminum body, so apparently Seaward isn't worried about the aluminum/brass joint either.

Unless you're heating seawater electrolysis/galvanic issues shouldn't really be much of a concern.

Torrid marine offers a really good thread sealant for their hot water heater systems that is highly rated. I am sure it is a re-sell of a loctite product or some other manufacturer but it was warmly received by professional boat builder magazine and passagemaker did a review as well.
