  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
34' CONVERTIBLE (1965 - 1969)
We had to tear out the foam rubber and vinyl covered padding in our v-berth. we have solved the water problem now, but we are unsure as to how to replace the walls.....my husband would like to use indoor carpet---but i think that would mold...do you have any suggestions..I would like it to look good --the rest of the boat has the original wood--but at the same time in this economy we need to be careful.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Being also from NC, and you know our humidity, I think the carpet on the sides would mildew easily. The vinyl would be easier to maintain. I too had to remove a piece in the head on the little window by the port. I was able to save it and am just going to reinstall once I make the repairs to the cabinet top and cabinet. I believe you can still by the vinyl already backed with the foam and the strips to go around the perimeter to dress off. Its really just a matter of careful installation, getting all the wrinkles out. Others may have some suggestions on what they have done in the past.

Where are you guys located in NC.

we are in wrightsville beach.

If we get the vinyl backed foam---how do you make an air space--so this doesn't happen again? It has to be thick foam---to go around the portholes.

should we attach it to laminate?

Since you fixed the water leak, you should have no issues with the new foam-backed vinyl. Heck, the old stuff lasted for 40+ years, so why not go back with the same?

true....that would be the easiest and least expensive thing to do!

Well now... I hafta recollect back to Ogden Top and Trim in Berwyn Il where I did some work as a kid.
Strip the old stuff off the panelling. ALL OF IT. get some nice bright vinyl, with colors of your choice and get a trim shop to sew them together. I'd get fancy with a compass rose or anchor sewn in the patern. SPRAY contact cement on both pieces and assemble. Staple back on to the OEM panels and yer almost done. The carpets a warm touch as the vinyl gives you a cold ass in the middle of the nite. ws

well, thank you for that good advice.

I know your're right we have done a beautiful job with the boat--and now I am trying to be cheap----but its a recession, i don't think the stimulus package will help with our boat repairs---although maybe we could live aboard if we had to,,,,
now, what else would you suggest?

By the way, even if we put in teak veneer, I don.t think it would be warm to the touch in the middle of the night!

I did this on our 34c.
Replaced all port windows and then sealed rub rail, it will leak also. Replaced the foam and then put layer of angel hair then Ultra leather to finish it with .

that sounds like a good idea.

We have just repainted the boat and they sealed up rub rails, and caulked everthing. Since then, we have not had any leakage.

what is angel hair, and where do you get the leather? that might be a good alternative to vinyl.

i think we have decided to redo the foam and then put the ultra leather in---I think this might be something we can handle--and it will be comfortable too

thanks for all your advice

I have a roll of the foam you can have, you pay the shipping. It worked out great in My old 36.

Got everything from upolstry shop. Angel hair is a very light polyester fiber that sort of gives it a soft feel and covers imperfections.

We got a roll of ultra leather from Regal boats in orlando. It was left over material that they sold for pennies on the dollar. Believe it retails for 100+ per yard and their cost was about 25/yd. Think we paid 6/yd.

We did this after installing new port lights and sealing the rub rail seam. I laid a layer of glass over the seam from the inside as well, had to cover all the old screw holes from prior upgrades and repairs. Fact our v bunk area was completley restored and was a real show place including the memory foam mattresses we had made with a thick quilted cover.

Oh by the way Banshee gave me his vintage flag staff when I lost mine in a storm. It did not go with the boat when it was sold. Keeping it as a keepsake from her.

Thanks again Banshee.
