  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
I am about to purchase a 1972 36c with 1990 merc 350hp motors in it the halon system has been removed, it has twin 150 gallon alum tanks needs some system updates and fixes. What are some major issues to look out for with this year/model? The head does not seem to flush it kind of pulses but doesnt go down. the survey came back structurally and mechanically sound with some recs for battery placement wiring and plumbing stuff and the AC may have an issue.

Also the owner said it was painted with Kam'ron not imron.... has anyone actually heard of this type of paint? I thought imron was one of the hardest out there?

Would love your feedback and any advice you can give me pre purchase I have been a lurker here for quite a while and you all know everything I hope to learn about hatteras'

Congrats on your upcoming purchase!

A couple of quick observations:
1. I would be Leary of a surveyor whom only noticed batteries, plumbing and AC on a 38 year old Hatt.
2. Decks and flybridge probably have moisture. Not a cheap fix.
3. Have the engines been surveyed? 20 year old gassers have to be tired.
4. Exhaust elbows, running gear, blisters, the list goes on and you get the idea.
5. What about the genset? Gas or diesel? Surveyed?

If there are any significant issues with any of these, plan to spend some big bucks.

Keep feeding details to this group - or better yet, a link to the boat for sale-and you'll get some high quality feedback.

Greetings BlackPearl,

Having put a lot of sea miles behind a 36 of the same vintage, I can say you made a good choice. They are a tuff little hull and have few issues compared to most boats of their age. However, they are now many decades old and it is the condition and the maintainance history of the boat that is the factor on what shape they are in.

I have looked at a large number of 36 boats over the years and found that very few have any serious deck issues. It is still important to sound the decks and ensure good installation of all deck fittings and maintain that or problems can generate.

The one place they can often have some rot is the aft salon bulkhead. The area where the handrail comes around and meets the bulkhead as well as below the window corners can have some soft areas. This bulkhead is built of two layers of marine ply and is very substaintial but if the water gets in it problems can occur. I ended up replacing mine entirely at repower and others have done so as well, or made other repairs.

The cost of the boat that Eric linked appears to be a decent buy. I would not worry much about the 454 mercs as they are at about half life or so with 500 hrs. Up side is they are simple to maintian, parts are easy to get and even a full rebuild not too crushing on the wallet. Downside is that the performance of that hull is so much better with big diesels it is almost a different boat. The alum tanks are what you need now for a gasser boat, but keep an eye on them for corosion issue over the years.

The issues with the head are anything from something broken, a clog or even not having the sea valves in the right position. Might be costly , but probably not. You have to put on the rubber gloves and investigate. The AC may also be simple issue, but factor in a replacement which is not cheap but fairly easy to do.

A short survey list is not necesarily a surprise as most prepurchase surveys are not really worth much, just something so the insurance company can write the risk. But overall the 36 is a simple boat and nothing hides if the surveyor is willing to crawl around a bit and use a flashlight. If there were electrical and plumbing issues you have to put a cost figure on them as part of your decision.

Anyway, all this is just my .02 and worth nothing more. If it is the right boat for you and the price is good, move forward and let the spending begin as the economy needs it.

Kam'ron is it Blue and has the name Tasha on it?

You guys know your Hatts..... it is indeed the vessel listed the surveyor noted no moisture on the decks salon or anywhere else for that matter the owner already replaced all the windows and made custom stainless settings and trim for them even the door which had had a small leak. i spoke to the surveyor again this morning he said the throttle would sometimes stick open on the genny and the owner verified this and said fixing it was next on his list or if i purchase it I should definatly get it done.

The toilet he wasnt sure about and neither was the surveyor he said he didnt "dig" into it lol. I am figuring in about $3,000 if i have to replace the system?

34Hatt your out here arent you? maybe keep your boat in the same marina as the one im looking at? saw a real real pretty 34c docked right next to Tasha.....

Tough heavy boat. Decks are cored so likely there will be core issues where ever somethign is bolted through. If alum tanks then cockpit deck has been removed as original tanks were glass. Rear deck is cored but no ideal what they may have used when they retanked it.

Keel is also cored, some have water in them from prior damage.

Engines. No way waste money on a survey on gas engines. You can do this yourself. No knocking or ticking. No smoke. Are spark plugs clean, no oil or black crap.

For Gas engines I would replace spark plugs, ignition wires, all cooling hoses and water pump impellor. Clean out oil cooler and heat exchangers and replace the risers and elbows, not clear what mercs have in this dept. Change oil to quality 10w40. Change trans fluid. Change fuel filters, not sure how many you may have. Change distributor cap and rotor and if it has points change to Pertornix II ignitor with the matching spark coil.

With all the above you will now have relatively trouble free engines for a long time and you will be able to trust them.

Gen, will depend on brand and age.

Go through all wiring on this boat, 12v and 120v. Make sure all connnectons are corrosion free and tight. I you have original power panels then make sure wires on the Amp meter are tight and all breaker connections are tight.
Get rid of all wires that go to nothing, most have lots of wires to no where from prior owners.

Remember if prior owner said it was new or overhauled, do not believe it was done right. Check it anyhow. I agree that the survey had to have missed a mile high elephant.

Well not right next to him but real close :)
I have know that boat for way before I landed up on the same dock and just can't believe it didn't sell yet. In a Nut shell I believe your getting and hell of a boat for the $$ its going for.
I know its not much in electronis and Inside need some updating If your some what handy its all easy stuff. The boat just has not been used much and he is just getting older plus his son use to do a lot for him but as you probably know he is gone. First thing to do is get a razor blade out and clean the window ;) I understand it but if you selling I feel that should be taking off.

As for the Hull paint it is amazing how that has held up that a lone is proof it is Good stuff. The top side was done not to long ago and all new tanks. From what I know the deck was dry so it was cut out then put back in place and done very nicely.
Just get some fresh gas in there ASAP since it just been sitting I also know it had fresh bottom paint, and zincs done this spring since it was a friend who painted it.

Let me know If you need anything and Lots of Luck.
Where will you be keeping it? Greenport is in July ;)

Dan

Most def stale gas in it the exhaust smelled a little when we fired it up but no smoke at all even when first started. I was thinking to just add some gas stabilizer till the tanks are empty then fill up with new gas. I think I may have a nice waterfront spot at Port of Egypt but can crash in greenport whenever as my good friends father in law owns Claudios.. If you know a good spot for not too much money im open to suggestions PoE wants around #%)) for the whole season and since we are a few months in a little less since i know the family and all.

If you dont mind me asking who do you have do your winterazation? maybe you can pm me thier info so i can get an estimate

Nice boat and you cant buy a used center console for that price. The engines in the pics are 454 big block GM 's should move the boat pretty good.We had a 65 34 with the 440 Mopar 290hp and it would do 20kts but my dad ordered the boat new and it was bare bones no gen no ac he even had hatt leave out the back bulkhead to save weight. the only problem with a gas boat is the ethanol issue I just had all the vro pumps and carbs replaced on my center console and the stuff that was replaced was supposed to be alchol "resistant"watch out for that word.and I do use Startron fuel supplement. For 20k or so more Id be looking at a oil burner. But thats just me I love the smell of smoking DDA's in the morning smells like were going fishing.
