  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Hi everyone would like to replace my Seabrace stabilizers on my 1989 65/74 MY 65 with
9ft cockpit extension. Was looking for advice gyro or fins and which manufacture and cost
all advice would be greatly appricated thanks

I like gyro gale.

Just did large Naiad fins on our 53 MY cost about $65,000 one year ago.

Naiad was always the gold standard, but there are many options now. I have heard good things about Wesmar as well.

Gyros like seakeeper are great if you find the space to install. Not as easy as it seems.

I ve been using ABT- Trac for a few years now, first on an 84 and now on a 116. The 116 have zero speed capability but we haven’t really had a chance to use them while anchored yet. Promising though

I have installed Tracs on my 53 during the repower but haven’t finished the hydraulics yet. Hopefully in the next few months. They should be very effective as they are the same size as what was on the 84 ...

As to Gyro Gale stabs, they were the only stabs that used compressed air and had very poor feedback. Lazzara used them for a few years in the 90s and quickly switched to Trac

Here is our story of replacing the Naiad 252's with Vetus.

Four years on and they have been trouble free. I particularly like the fact that there are no seals to replace or service and they are sealed for life.

The brains / computer does a good job and they will operate at zero speed if connected to an electric pump.

Worth a look.

Thanks for all the input I like Gyro Gale with no hydraulics has anyone else had experince
with these ?

I have surveyed a couple of boats with the Gyro Gales including an 84 foot Lazarus and a 48 Hatteras’s LRC and a 60 foot trawler and none of them were still working, in fact the Hatteras’s just had them removed. Not sure how much that is worth, but doesn’t speak very well for longevity. John

I have Gyro Gale, they work well. Ss for components not working on boats for sale, I would suggest they are a reflection ot the seller, not the component manufacture.

I can point out one good atrobute, when you have a leak easy to clean up.

A few years ago I asked for feedback on yacht forums as I was looking at an older Lazzara with Gyro Gale for a client. Every captain and owner which used them wasn’t happy. Lazzara only used them for a few years in the late 90s and quickly switched to Trac. It does sound like a good idea but since Gyro Gale is the only stabilizer using compressed air and every other one uses hydraulics....

I think a big selling point for Gyro Gale is that they will work with a DIYer. I know a guy who installed his own Wesmar system, but I don't think most manufacturers will allow that. They want you to use their certified installers/dealers.

Major Hattitude, sent you a PM

I'll be installing Naiad 252 with 7.5 sq-ft fins in November. Estimate I got was $58K with a +/- 10% range on actual final price and about 30 days for the install.

I personally like a system that is tried and true with a large network of service providers just in case. From my research, the regular maintenance on the Naiads are not cost prohibitive nor overbearing.

I am rebuilding my Naiad 252 system, every part is still available. This is after the system was installed at the Hatteras factory in 1983 . This is very impressive to me . The Naiad manual states the most seals are lifetime. That was over 37 years ago. They didn’t think the systems would be in use today . But they make sure you can keep your system operating today. Think about that when you go to a different system with good marketing .
