  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
I am in the process of purchasing a replacement for my orinal props ( 28 x 30 x2), the boat has DD 8V71TI and , and the props are 46 years old that came with the boat whe my father purchased it in 1978. I sent a form to General Propeller in FL and they recomended a Veem 5 blades 29.5x25.8. Has any one with a similar boat ( Hatteras 53 or 58 YF) has any experience they can share regarding these new props ? Thanks in advance.

Your original wheels were designed years ago. Considered hy-tech then, the best set was tested, selected, shopped for and installed.
Typically, Dyna-Quads would be the replacement.
However, the later propeller technologies have opened up new fields in propeller design.

When shopping, we always want the best.
Some times we can afford the best.
Some times, the best is not really the best for an old boat.
Matching up old engine, clutch and hull technologies with new wheel designs may not work out as expected.

As your doing now, your asking for suggestions.

I'm a prop dummy but my shop seems to understand my 45 year old Bertram.
They have added curves into my old tech props that have really helped.

At least, you would get another pro response that may help your shopping.

Woooooo....Veems eh? That's going to be spendy. Personally I'd go with the Michigan DQX's which are a similar design for <1/2 of the price. That said, if you go for it, I'm very curious about any performance gains with the new-style high skew props. Been considering doing the same thing myself.

All of that said, they're props, if they're not bent/vibrating or cracked or something, then they're fine. Sure you could probably get 1% better fuel economy or whatnot, but how much diesel can you buy for $30k? I would think a lot. The best advice here is find a reputable competent prop shop (like Black Dog) and ask them for their recommendations. They don't have as much of an iron in the fire as Veem does, they aren't going to do anything but say you should buy Veem props for obvious reasons.

Can't comment on that specific boat and size, but I bought my Veem wheels from General Propeller, and they did a great job sizing them, and they are glass smooth running.

Did you notice any performance difference, or did you do it when you did your repower?
