Hatteras Model
40' DOUBLE CABIN-Series I (1986 - 1989)
Okay, Just started looking at the bloody waterlines. From the bottom of the water tank is an elbow to a ball valve to the grey plastic tubing that was used (no clue as to hot or cold later on). without taking it off, What size line do you believe is there from the tank to the ER?

And so goes the project to get a new water heater installed...

the silver stuff on the hull is insulation :)

Noel, It is hard to judge the size from a picture. Try a caliper.

Are there any markings on the tube? It looks like the old PB (polybutylene) pipe, and if so, examine the INSIDE carefully near the bends as well as near the coupling nut. If it is white and crusty, that will be oxidation and failures have happened in these in houses. Note especially if there are any fine cracks on the inside near the nut. If you see any cracks at all, I'd change it out to PEX.

Bob,

I am changing it all out to pex. I need to know what size of small pipe to by to get the pex to grab on too. I have 100' of blue 1/2" on the boat to start with. I am planning on using the sharkbite couplers.... Problem is, I have some white nodules (or something) in the lines now (I believe they have replugged the line I blew out late last year for the forward vacuflush head...) Better to just start anew...

Also, the same I think happened to my ice machine (now that is gone as well)...

Noel,

If you already have the new water heater, check the directions to see if they identify the size of the outlet fitting. Armed with that information, Home depot ought to be able to supply the transition fittings you need. If the old stuff was in fact PB, none of those fittings will work on PEX because they have different wall thicknesses.

Bob,

It is all PB until I get through with the exchange. I am going to manifold everything after i set up a tee for the hot water heater. Each outlet gets a separate line so it will be easier to kill it from a central location if needed. And a ball valve at the end so it will make keeping the areas around the fittings easier if I need to make a change with a faucet etc...

I am planning on putting a filter in the line from the tank as well. A "whole house filter. Now, How do I get rid of any deposits that might be in the tank and also is there a good not expensive gauge for the water tank that I can replace the broken one with? This sits at the top port side of the tank...

Thanks....

Poly B was discontinued due to problems with fittings and concerns about carcinogenic toxins.

also, when installing any white PVC piping outdoors, be sure to paint it as it is suspect to UV rays.

Noel: I recently had the whole vessel repumbed with Seatech instead of PEX.

It is similar in material but without all the crimping. There are limitless options with valving and fittings and it all snaps together easily.

I used Blue for cold and Red for Hot and set up a 3 zone manifold near the freshwater supply fitting so I can turn off forward cabins aft cabins and upper decks individually without impacting the entire vesssel.

Another great suggestion from the Hatteras School where Bruce Morrison AND Roger Wetherington both reccomended the product. I am so thankful I went to the event.

Shawn,

Thanks. However it is PEX. And I am familiar with the fittings as I have been moving over to this style of plumbing tubing. PEX is good stuff, I have not sprung a leak under my floors yet :D
