  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Just purchased "Traveler", a beautiful "Classic", built in 1970 (hull #9), 53' MY. Known previously as"Fightin' Irish", soon to be christened "Heavenly Gates". She'll be berthed at Capitol Yacht Club in the near future!

Couple questions:
1. What can I expect for gph? She has twin, turbocharged Cummins VT8-370-M's with about 1200
hrs on them.
2. While hoisting the dingy, the davit broke off at the angle joint. New part costs $1200. Any other
suggestions?

Sure appreciate any other sage advice for this first-time boat owner!!

Glenn Gates
Arlington, VA

Glenn,
I can't help with your questions, but wanted to say welcome aboard!
You're not far from us, so maybe we can connect this summer...

For $1200 for a new one, I think I'd have a welder look at it and see if they can perhaps sleeve it and weld it back together. Ouch.

Hi Glenn, Based upon Capt. Mark's notes that I have managed to find in old e-mails, Traveler averaged around 15-16 GPH @ 10 knots. This was data from the 3 day running trip from Three Mile Harbor, East Hampton, L.I. NY to Kent Island, Md. The caveat to this is that we now know that the running gear was likely quite fouled during that trip. This based upon her condition at your survey haulout and the fact that the seller had not had her cleaned prior to the move. Capt Mark could tell the difference in her performance when we ran her on your sea trial. What all this means is that you most likely would expect her fuel economy to be better on your trip home to DC.

Welcome!

Can't answer your questions either but as a reference, our 53 MY with 8V71TIs averages around 10gph at around 9.5K if the bottom/gear is reasonably clean. So I would expect you to get somewhat better mileage with the newer "modern" engines on your boat.

I wouldn't call those Cummins "newer". They should get about the same economy as the Detroits, 10gph at 9kts with clean bottom.

Welcome

Before trying to weld the davit I d make sure the welder inspects it carefully. If one weld let go, others may be weak as well.

Hull speed is about 9 to 9.2 knots so your best slow cruise will be 9kts. At 10kts, you fuel burn will be at 25 to 30% higher for only 10% more speed. at 9kts you shouldn't burn more than 9 to 10gph with clean running gear

At 10kts and a dirty bottom, I can see How she ll burn 15gph

Genset should burn about 1gph on the typical loads you ll find on these boats

The VT8-370 M's are the original (optional) power for this boat. They may perhaps burn more fuel per hour than the GM 871's as they are larger displacement @ 785ci and are of course 4 stroke. But, then again what the heck do I know?

I assumed those engines were: 1- more efficient being 4 strokers, and 2 - a newer design simply because I figured it was impossible that they could be older. ;)

It appears I may be wrong on both counts! :)
