  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Has anybody on the forum replaced the original split system with a self contained unit
I put a Webasto into the guest stateroom with very little noise especially from the water
About a third of the cost of a spit system

i did it several years ago, unit fit where the air handler was. i dont think i modified the closet at all. been a while so i couldnt tell you the name brand or size but it is working fine

Last year i removed the original split system and installed an 18000 BTU selfcontained unit from Flagship marine that services both the master stateroom and the guest . I am very happy with its performance.
The only work was to route the water lines wich I dis using pex tubbing and a minor modifications to instal a "T" to send the cool air to the guest stateroom.

Pex tubing for sea water instead of marine hose? Will that pass survey?

We do not have surveys down here !

Tired of spending money on the old split system. I’m contemplating pulling the split system and installing self contained where the air handlers are. My question “is the 18BTU too big for the master / vip stateroom application?” I was thinking of going with 16BTU there - 1979 58’ MY up galley

i put a 12000 cause that is what was in there. look at your owners manual, it will tell what each unit btu was from the factory.

Just finished my install on our 53my
Went with 10klike the original
It is much quieter than the original split system
Went on the shelf port side of the closet then boxed it in Didn’t remove the old air handler as difficult and the space was too small for the new Webasto

10K is in my 53’ and it turns it into a meat locker.

I did this on Pau Hana, with new single-piece units in the V-berth, midships and aft staterooms. The only issue I ran into was that the 16K MarineAire unit was defective out of the box, and they refused to honor warranty or exchange the unit. After I asked them in writing to exchange the unit as faulty they replied my warranty was voided (unit was less than 3 months old), then told me if I dared fight them they'd sue. Avoid MarineAire in Miami at all costs. Mermaid Manufacturing has reopened under new owners post-Ian, and Flagship, and Dometic are all very good. PM me for full details on MarineAire unit faults.
