  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I just purchased a 1978, 53' MY. The previous owner was not very helpful with information on how systems were used or where shutoff valves were located. My questions center around that topic. I am hoping that there is another owner of the same vintage of boat that can help out.

1. I can not get the Galley Maid water pump to prime. Is there a water tank shut off valve?

2. I can not get water to the ice maker even with shore water hooked up. Is there a shut off valve for it?

3. How does the ice maker come out of the cabinet? Anyone out there replaced one before?

4. The washer/dryer appears not be getting any water. Is there a shutoff valve for it?

5. There is a tank under the bed in the master stateroom. Is that a water tank or holding tank?

6. There are 2 light bulb sockets in the 2 galley light fixtures. Only one of them appear to be functional. I assume one is 32 volts, the other is 110? Can anyone confirm?

Thanks.

Tim

I'm sure you will get lots of help.

The GM pump can be a bit of a pain to prime. What i do is remove the tank end of the 6" hose from the pump to the tank and either suck on it or use the suction pumps marine stores all sell that are about 10" long and draw water up in the pump with it by sticking the suction end in the hose you just unhooked.. Then turn it on and let it run in the bilge for a second, turn it off and re-hook hose. This is made much easier if you have the pressure switch with the lever on the side which switches protect against running dry, highly recommended...then you can just turn it on by lifting the lever for a second.

There are likely shut off valves for the ice maker and the washing machine.

The Raritan ice makers are self contained and easy to remove but expensive. If it is not serious, fix it. I don't know about other brands.

Others may have clever ways to get the GM going by the way.

Good luck.

Ted

On the ice maker you can remove the vent on the front of the unit and there is a small shutoff valve inside.

welcome... and congratulations !

first, call Hatteras and order a set of manual and blue prints for you boat... cheap and worth it !!

although keep in mind these boats have been modified by owners over the years, usually for the better, sometime for the ... not so better :-)

the GM pump can be primed as described above, or by opening the plug on top of the stator (impeller) and filling it with water. you need to hold the lever to keep it running till pressure starts building. it also helps to have the tanks filled up as that will raise water level higher (thanks to the tall transom tank) and help priming.

you have 3 tanks... one under the master floor, one under the VIP stbd bed and one against the transom. they're interconnected with the filler connected to the transom tank and gravity filling the other ones.

mine (1970) has valves behind the washer, there is also a valve behind the ice maker, under the sink.

the galley has two overhead lights, one 32v and one 110v

hope this help... there are many 53 owners here that can answer qustions but getting the manuals will help

Thanks to everyone that replied to my questions on location of valves.

Regards,

Tim

All your problems are water related. Get the GM pump going and everything else should work. There is a check valve at the tank for the GM pump, sometimes after sitting it will stick closed. First prime the pump through the primer plug. Sometimes a little soap helps to prime faster as well.

hey Cap--- My GM FW pump has a dead short and trips the breaker. It was wet and I guess the commutator is corroded. Next week we will pull it apart to clean and if need be, use the other macerator pumps for parts. Are they pretty much interchangeable?? Is the FW pump a rubber impeller or bronze? I need to check the check too. Also have a new pressure switch we need to install. The old one was full of rust and crud. Thanks, ws

Bill,
The motor voltage is the only difference. The pump parts are interchangeable as long as it is the same model. ie mr10 or mr7. The small stator on the head pump is a LH stator. the suction stater is the same as the mr 10 water pump.
Just compare the parts as you mix and match and it will be evident. Dave

Thanks Dave! I guess by pulling them apart I'll be able to tell. I just bought #2 Raritan Atlantes terlet and can now get rid of the original HattCrappers !! All I need is a good GM water pump and the 3 GM macerators can go (32vdc)! The best part is SIX less through hulls for the direct discharge system !
This is the original GM macerator and FW pump... can I make one good one out of the bunch? Heads are for sale too... ws
