  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
60' MOTOR YACHT (1987 - 1989)
OK, I want to do 2 things:
1) Replace the full size, side-by-side doored fridg/freez, 120v only... w/ a new one (the one in place is original [1983]); and
2) Provide for 120v/12v power to the new one.

Runin' the Gen all the time (OK, most the time) to keep stuff cold seems idiotic.

Q 1) How do I get the damn thing outta the boat?
Q 2) Inverter (for this and other 120v uses) or a fridg/freez unit that draws off of both 120v/12v?

Best way to get an old fridge out is with the sawzall. I cut up my S by S into 3 pieces a couple of years ago and hauled it out like that. The new one just fit down the stairs.

I have a 1972 48ft YF. When I measured the side by side fridge it was about an inch bigger than the window frames....I forgot to measure the fridge with the door removed (via hinges)....then it would have fit out a side salon window!!! But I would have had to remove an external handrail and at least one stanchon....and those bolts/studs into the deck combing would not budge.

So I put a 12v evaporator (ice cube tray) in the frig side...sure its takes a bit of room, but it accomplished just what I wanted...12v refrigeration. Adler Barbour. The old freezer side stayed cool, not cold, and was great for wine storage. Then I later decided I could put another another evaporator in the old freezer side. So I bought a used Adler Barbour on e-bay...A piece of plywood with edges of rubber gasket let me seal off the bottom third of the old freezer and I use that when I need to keep a bunch of food frozen. Wine stays above in a cool environment..

My 43 at some point had issues (before I got it) it was "rehabed" by a guy on the chesapeake and still works very well. I think if I would have an issue I'd try the same. Bill

Why don't you just buy an inverter and keep your old refer? It'll run the refer all day and all night on the hook, and your alternators will recharge the batts while you're running. No genny required! If you turn on the genny some for hot water, stove, etc. it'll recharge the batts too.

I have the same model as yours (1982 Series 1 48 MY), except that mine is a year older than yours. A couple if years ago I gutted the galley to the glass hull and completely built a new galley which included under the counter ref/freezers. Getting the old full size unit out was fun but we did it anyway. It required removing the port side salon sliding windows and the stantions outside. The screws can be a problem, but they eventually came out. We had to remove the doors and it just fit through.

Caution..... Be sure to cover the window sill with a blanket or some cardboard to protect it from damage and have at least 2 strong guys inside and 2 more outside on the floating dock. Worked like a charm....

Oh yeah..... Be sure to cool down a few before you commence work so you can reward your 4 strong helpers afterwards.
