  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' EXTENDED DECKHOUSE (1983 - 1988)
I just moved my davit location for easier access. In the process I ended up taking out my Nautical Structures low profile unit and going with an old Pipe davit that was given to me. It is in perfect shape but came without the winch and cable. What winch works best on these?

What are you lifting? AC or DC?

Ditto, Dutton-Lainson with Amsteel Blue. A little slow on the cable speed but does the job, Amsteel has no meat hooks, buy it long enough so you can cut off the length exposed to the sun each year with needing to replacing it.

I'm lifting a RIB with a 15hp 2-stroke but thinking about buying a new Highfields which is actually a lighter RIB but it would have a 20 or 25hp 4-stroke. Since the new RIB has an aluminum hull it weighs in at 154lbs and a 20hp Suzuki is 106lbs. So, that's 260lbs dry weight. I can't imagine being much over 300 total.

What size Amsteel and which model D-L winch? I have a 120v outlet nearby that runs off of my inverter. 12v would be a problem unless I run wire up from my generator battery. Everything else up there is 32v.

Okay, looks like the SA5015AC with remote should work. Its 120v and comes with 20ft of 3/16 cable. If I switch out cable for the Amsteel, how many feet will fit on there and do I still go with 3/16"?

As to the Amstel, even in its smallest diameter it is way stronger than you need, what I do is buy a diameter that is close to the old wire so you can mount it in the clamp on the drum of the winch. At that diameter the Amstel is probably strong enough to lift your entire boat, I mean the big boat.

The thicker the Amsteel the better it lays up on the drum. I have 1/4" it's still not perfect but better the the 3/16, that matched the steel cable, and still fit in the block on the top of the davit.

A surprise side affect of the Amsteel is the winch is quieter.

The winch comes with 20' of 3/16. Will it hold 25' or 30' or what? And if I go up to 1/4", how much? You say, get extra so you can cut it off later, so how much extra will fit on the drum?

On my 53 my my drum is maybe half full and I have more than enough line to easily reach the water. If you make sure it winds onto the drum evenly from fully to each side it holds a lot of line. John

I put an extra 16' on so I can cut off the length exposed that is UV for two years . Each spring cut off the compromised section, I lift a 700# RIB and don't want it to land in the cockpit.

I would also recommend leaving one course of wraps on the drum if the winch, the clamp that holds line in place is better suited for the cable and a knot doesn't quite fit .

Great!! Thanks.

I also need a pulley for the end of the davit. The one that's on there is all plastic(nylon) and the center hole is all wollered out. It measures 3" x 9/16 with a 5/16" bolt in the center. Any ideas on where to pick up one of those? This one appears to have had no bearing or bushing; all plastic.

You might be able to find something to steal a pulley from a hardware store, or buy some bushing stock and drill out your pulled for a slight interference fir and tap it in.

Or call Pipewelders.

So, Sky what are you doing with the Nautical Structures unit that you took off?

I don't know if yours is like mine but the pulley at the end is open on top so the line can just drop into the pulley, does not have to be threaded through a hole or anything. Because of this I just lift the line out and store it under my motor cover so no sun damage to the line at all. John

Mine is the same but it does have a "keeper" bolt above the pulley.

It will be for sale shortly. It is the MC mini crane, 800lb capacity, painted Hatteras off-white and in excellent condition with only a few minor nicks and scrapes.

I need to get the new unit working in order to use it to lower the Nautical Structure unit off of the boat (boat on the hard in heated storage right now).

FYI, Dutton Lainson does not recommend synthetic rope like Amsteel. They contend it is too slippery and will damage the drum or expand the sides of the drum. So use at your own risk. Also, someone mentioned line retrieval speed. My previous 2 something thousand pound Dutton Lainson was also very slow. I now have just ordered the 1200 pound model which has a significantly faster retrieval speed. My Rigid Boat with 30hp Etec weighs about 650. These winches are rated for lifting capacity instead of horizontal pull so it should lift it fine.

Winch mounted. Waiting on the Amsteel to be delivered. Thanks for the advice.

I have 50' of 5/16 and lift my 640# Rigid Boat. I spliced a loop in the end of mine for that clamp. The yard originally used a metal crimp which is also a good idea but that I cut off because I slid a washer on to keep the weight off the loop on the end.
