I took out both shafts on my project boat today and both are bent.

Where can I buy new shafts?

Aquamet 19
1 3/8"
105" long

Where are you located?

Did you think about changing to 1.5?

I'm in Puerto Rico.

To change to 1.5" I would have to change shaft tubes, cutlass bearings, etc. I only have 170hp per engine so not worth it.

How did they get bent? We’re you aware before the haul out?

No idea how. One is bent in the end where the prop was. The other one is bent right in the middle.

Yesterday I disconnected the shafts from the trans to check alignment and in one of them the coupling was loose so decided to take both shafts out. The other one was rubbing with the shaft tube so it "ate" the shaft, both are pitted and at some point someone worked them and wore them down where the couplings go. Complete disaster.

I wasn't aware, bought the boat as a project.

Not always true. My 41c was easily upgraded from 1.5 to 1.75 with new cutlass bearings and a little machine work on the packing gland.

There has to be a good prop shop in PR arhat machine new shafts. Have them calculate the safety factor for your shafts to make sure you reach ok. You could also get a stronger grade material keeping the same diameter

If no good shop in PR, you can get the done in Miami. I ve used Tri County Prop both for my the new shaft on my repowered 53 as well as 3 1-2 shafts to replaced cracked ones on the boat I run. Good service and prices and can be shipped. Even with freight might be cheaper.

No good shops here to do that work.

I'm supposed to get a quote from Frank & Jimmies on monday, also filled out the "shaft form" on generalpropeller.com and got an estimate from deepblueyachtsupply.com
I'll call tricountypropellers on monday.

The boat originally had bronze shafts and in 1978 he replaced them with SS. I took them to the best guy there is here and he put a magnet on them and told me they are trash as they are more iron than SS.

Go to FJ propeller in Fajardo in Puerto del Rey. It is run by Bobby Lemire (787) 409-0303 cell. They have straightened my bent shafts and crunched props.
Tell him I sent you.

I will. thanks

Got a few quotes and the cheapest one was $1406 from General Propeller.

I’ve used Frank and Jimmy’s and they were fantastic. Told them what I needed and they did the work and shipped them to my yard in NJ. I bought raw roller stock from Industrial
Metals and Frank and Jimmy did the work

I’d also opt for Aqumet 22 over 19. Stronger and much more resistant to crevice cracks, corrosion and electrolysis

Frank and Jimmies was the first place I got a quote. They were at $1800. I'm going with Aquamet 19 as I only have 170hp.

It’s not just the strength the 22 is much better for recreational boats that aren’t used on a daily basis. The 22 offers superior resistance to corrosion.

Let me get a quote for the Aquamet 22, if there is not too much difference, then its a no brainer.

Got the quote for Aquamet 22. Its $430 more to go with them instead of the 19's.

Well worth it... it s nothing i the big picture of the haul out, new shaft etc...
