Hi All,

How do you remove the nut on the lntake lmpeller of an aireaserch Turbo when the Allen keyway on the shaft is stripped out?

Anyone have any ideas?

I'd let a turbo shop mess with that job.

I have rebuilt a lot of turbos but with the situation you describe, I agree with Andy that taking it to a shop that does that sort of work is best. Trying to fix your problem is prone to become a bit heavy-handed with most home shop tools and you can easily cause an imbalance in the turbine/impeller/shaft which would cause it to do a hand-grenade imitation when put back in service.

A turbo shop will have the tools/fixtures to do the repair and check the rotational balance before re-assembly.

Ditto Ditto. Don't get yourself in trouble trying to fix something this sensitive. Let the pro's take care of it.

The turbine end should have a hex or 12 pt. that you can get a wrench or socket on. Mark the compressor wheel alignment with the shaft before you do anything else.

Now that I've told you how you should do it. And others have told you why you shouldn't do it. Can I ask why you are doing it?

Hi All,

Thanks for the advice, sorry I wasn't clear but I was asking for my Mechanic, not me. In the time I wrote the post last night to this morning He was able to get it apart.

Scrod - The problem became apparent when we started the engine and had a huge white cloud of smoke from the starboard engine. Through a process of elimination we were lead to one of the turbos.
Unfortunately we don't have any documentation which if we did would have helped a lot. The other problem (for whatever reason) the PO took all identifying part number tags off .....that's the reason I posted the request.

Thanks again all

My mechanic is a top Detroit guy and when we pulled the turbos on mine he sent them out.

Thanks Jack, we will be doing the same too.

SEND THEM TO SCRODDY!!!!!! Yes I was yelling:cool:

Usually people take the tags off for one of two reasons: Either they can't see the numbers with the unit mounted on the engine. Of course after they do this they never put them back or keep a record of it.

Or the turbo is stolen and they don't want traceable serial numbers on it.

If your mechanic has a source for turbos that's great. If I can help please feel free to shoot me a PM and I'll see what I can do. Although, without part numbers it's not a lot of fun.

Thank you for the endorsement Mr. Appleton. :D

Thanks Scrod I appreciate the offer, and will contact you if my Mechanic doesn't have a good source, thanks again.
