  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
54' MOTOR YACHT (1985 - 1988)
I'm looking for an NYC certified electrical tech in the Daytona area to assist with some upgrades to my enetrtainment system and a few other relatively minor problems related to the inverter and wiring. Any recommendations? The person would need to be willing to travel to Sanford, Fl, about 45 miles from Daytona. Thanks.

I have used Pat Adsit on several occasions, including with my inverter. He is in Daytona/Ormond and well respected in the area. He is ABYC certified. Not sure if he makes house calls to Sanford, but never hurts to ask.

Btw, if you are in sanford have you been to the Willow Tree Cafe (Hollerbach's)? Great place, always enjoy the authentic German food & beers!

Thanks, David. You're right about the Willow Tree Cafe. The first time we went in there we didn't know it was German food. What a surprise. Some of the best I've had, including the German communities in Minnesota.

Still looking for an electrical tech who can help with entertainment system upgrade and an inverter problem. I have one, but not sure if this person will come to Sanford. Any other recommendations?

I probably should know, but what is a certified NYC Tech?

What are you try to do with the entertainment system upgrade?

I should have typed ABYC certified. Sorry.

Specifically, with regard to the stereo upgrade, I have a Sony entertainment system 6.1 stereo receiver that was on the boat when I bought it. However, it is currently functioning only as a radio running through the original speaker system. The TV and DVD player are not connected to it. There is no CD player at this time. I want to add a CD player and perhaps upgrade the speakers. My preference would be to keep the components I have and just add a CD player, but I really do not know a lot about these systems. I don't need volume that will blow me off the boat. I just want decent quality sound. I'm looking for someone who can come to the boat, advise me what I need without trying to sell me a multi-thousand dollar system, and install it.

The inverter is a large Trace locate in the generator room. It has a wierd wiring system. I have never been able to figure out how to operate it. The former captain never used it, so he was no help.

I also want to replace the 32V washdown pump. The plumbing is there, but the old pump is gone.

Let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks.

I don't think ABYC has specs on AV systems. In fact I believe NMEA only addresses some parts of the AV products as they interface with the marine systems.

For AV systems you will be looking at different standards.

SMPTE (Society of motion picture and television engineers) governs the film and television standards and makes recomendations to the FCC and other countries governmental bodies.

SBE ( Society of broadcast engineers) handles the RF transmissions from terrestrial stations to microwave and satelite.

ICIA covers large displays and AV systems like classrooms and boardrooms.

AES/EBU are European and US audio standards.

You need someone that does AV for the AV. That is if you want it done right.

The inverter is another issue but if you have the schematics and can trace the wires it probably can be resolved easily.

It seems all of your issues are low voltage ( as in not 120 V AC ) .

I agree with Scott. You don't need or want an electrician for your AV needs. Find a good trustworthy AV tech and explain what you would like. They should be able to give you different options and help you determine what will best suit your needs. As for the inverter and the washdown pump, they should be simple fixes than any decent marine service tech can handle. I would make sure the batteries for the inverter are good. If no one has used them for years, they may need replacing.

Bill - call Geek Squad. They make visits.

now there is a bunch of under qualified av guys.

They're perfectly qualified, they stay at a Holiday Inn Express. In all seriousness, Scott's right, find a AV guy (that knows WTF he's doing). You're putting too much emphasis on the qualifications, and not enough on finding someone knowledgable and in your area.

Hey Jason where is the holiday inn express?

In all seriousness doing it right is usually the last thing most self proclaimed AV gurus do. 90% don't have a clue all they know is loud, bright or big.

Sorry about using the incorrect acronym, and thanks to Scott for clearing them up for me. I called Pat Adsit in Ormond Beach. Sounds like he can handle everything I need.
