There is now a ban on Nassau grouper fishing from December 1, 2006 to February 28, 2007. In addition, the High Cay, Andros aggregation site is closed from November 1, 2006 to February 28, 2006. Support our fishermen and our fishery by purchasing other fish during the closed season.

Thanks

Adam R.
From the website:
The fishing industry contributes on average about 2.5 % to the GDP with over 9,000 individuals employed in the sector 95% as fishermen.

The Bahamas GDP is roughly $6 billion dollars, the fishing industry value is $150 million or $16,000 per individual in the industry. $6 billion GDP / population of 203,000 =$29,556 per individual unless you are a fisherman and then you make much less per capita. It would appear that tourism is much more lucrative than fishing. The website also stated that 60 percent of the conch harvest for the year occurs during the "closed season" so much for enforcement for the local fishermen. I guess the problem has got to be us americans.

There is currently no clocsed season for conch, there is for grouper and lobster. The grouper season is closed because during the next few months, grouper gather in large #s and are subject to over fishing.
