Hi Does anyone know anything about Mystic Seaport in Ct. I have a wedding to go to in East Haven in November and will have a Sunday free I'm looking for something to do with the kids?

Brian

Its a great day with the kids
Its been a few years but if I remember right there is a whaling thing down the street or next door that was pretty cool to.

You're coming to my territory. My office is in East Haven and I live about 40 minutes from Mystic. It's a great place to spend some time. I've been going there since I was a kid growing up in RI. I was there last month to meet some of my childhood friends from RI. We met at the bar/restaurant that's at the entrance. It was a great place to hang.

You'll have fun, especially after you get out of East Haven (just kidding).

We were there about 20 yrs ago (also went up for a wedding). Had a super time but only had about 4 hrs. to be there.

Would love to go back when I had a couple of days to spend there, and hope this time it isn't raining the entire time...

I remember visiting some sort of maritime museum there as a kid. It had some old whaling boats and such.

We bought our 58YF from the Mystic Seaport Museum and had an opportunity to spend several days there prepping for the cruise back to Virginia. The museum is set up like a fishing village including several boats built at the facility. We think this would be a great place for a wedding. You may want to contact them about availability.

A bit off topic, but does Captn. K recall if Frank Pepe's Pizza is still open in New Haven? My Dad went to Yale after the war and he always raved about the place. Now my wife and I are going to be in Avon until friday and I want to go over there if it still exists.

As far as I know, it's stil there. I'm not sure who is actually running it. You can't go wrong in New Haven for Pizza. There is a lot of great pizza still there.

Have fun and eat well!!

Mystic is a great place and full of maritime history.

The "museum" features a duplicate of an old slave ship (can't remember the name) famous for it's sabotage by occupants and some prominent black "captain" who sailed it's human cargo to freedom. Also featured are replicas of old sailing trawler types where you can walk through and see how the crew lived and endured the lifestyle of the early seamen.

Talking about things you never forget, there is a little known marina in Noank with a nearby restaurant that only features "fish and chip" type entres. Because they do not have a liquor and beer license you are allowed to "bring your own booze". Something I have not seen here in the south for over 2 decades.

Enjoy.

Capn Bill,

You are mixing up two different ships. Mystic has the whaler, Charles W Morgan which is the last floating whaling ship, I think. The ship you are talking about is the slave ship Amistad and is berthed in New Haven. This is also a good one to see. It is a replica and goes out on cruises.

By the way, we do still have a fair amount of places that are BYOB. It's just something us geographically challenged Northerners have not been able to give up totally!

Have fun!

He may be thinking about the Amistad and the Seaport because it was built there. One time I was there, was during its construction it was about 60% at that time that was around 1998. The Seaport is great and so is the town. We go every two years or so.
You should enjoy it greatly.

As usual, you are correct, Lt Dan! I forgot that was the time period she was being built up there.

Pepe's is open. It's on Wooster St in New Haven, but if you go, try The Spot. The Spot is in the parking lot to the left of Pepes. It's the original Pepe's restaurant, and they have the original ovens and the identical menu. Same owners and same ingredients. No line, or much shorter line to get in. And, they don't rush you out like Pepes does.

And don't forget to walk down the street to the Italian bakery (Lucibello's, I think) for some nice biscotti when you're done.

Oh, and don't bother looking for the Amistad. It's sailing to Africa right now.

Thanks for rescuing me Dan. It must have been around the year 2000 when we cruised into Mystic. The Amistad was some 75% near completion.

Coincidently, we had considered going back to Mystic just last August and continuing on to Cutty Hunk but as you probably know the "Sound" was choppy and rainy for several days.

Wonderful place to boat, and an awful lot of history in the area too.
