Ok everyone, I'm stumped. I found this leaking part in the bowels of the starboard engine room, aft of the engine, against the bulkhead. It appears to be part of the fresh water tank system. It is leaking badly when the water tank is filled. It kind of looks like a filter housing? But why would it be there?
What is it? I need to replace that ASAP.

I think it's an aftermarket leak. Probably installed by the po.

Is it on the pressurized line? Perhaps some sort of filter? At least the po didn't waste a lot of money on those fancy stainless steel hose clamps.

Seriously, if it were me I would just eliminate it.

If that is before the freshwater pump, it might be a strainer. Open it up and see what you have.

I agree that it looks like a filter/strainer. I also agree that I'd remove that one.

We have a large "whole house" water filter for our system immediately downstream from the water pump. There is also a very coarse mesh strainer in the ER between the water tank and the pump but its purpose is to stop any "large bits," not to do any serious filtration. Then, post-pump, the whole-house filter provides the major filtration.

Looks like a strainer to me. I'd say you're lucky it started to leak. The install looks very poor and a disaster waiting to happen, particularly if it's under pressure when connected to city water. Rip it out and replace with a new strainer with proper connection.

As others say, I guess it's a strainer. But if so, what an idiotic one....nearly inaccessible location and no obvious way to inspect what it might have strained.

Other than the intake of a watermaker, why would one need a strainer in the fresh water system in the first place ? Do chunks of fiberglass sometimes come loose inside water tanks ?

I'm guessing it's in the starboard engine room aft bulkhead. It's a strainer before the pump, the line on the left, in the photo, heads for the tank and the one on the right heads to the tank.

It looks like a par water strainer with the clear top and screen missing. Hard to tell from that picture
