Stumbled across a current MTU website for old 2 cycle Detroit Diesels:
http://2-cycle.mtu-online.com/index.php/products/engine-models

Among other things it mentions 53 series are available a reliabilt remanufactured engines and 8V71's are still in production for the military....also says about 500,000 of 3.5 million DD manufacturer are still in use....

Enjoy.....

Only 500,000? I would have thought that number would have been higher. But, I guess you have to figure a large number would have been taken out of official service for being used as parts motors.

There a lot more than that number. Probably MTU's excuse to obsolete parts that they are not making enough profit on. Notice the HUGE price increases and shortages of parts since MTU bought DD? Pay no attention to the propaganda.

I had the same thought on the understated number of 2 cycle Detroits....too low a figure @ 500,000.

How do they know the number of DD in my old marina, for instance?? I know of eight minimum 2- 6-71's, 2-67-1TI's, my prior 8V71TI's, and a a pair of 8V 82TI's, minumum, but how could they know.....they do not....

You are right on; I have 6 in two boats; (2 - 271's & 2 - 671's ) & (2 - 8v71's in the hatt). Old iron doesn't die as fast as the marketing pukes want you and their management to believe, esp in this economic environment. Calif created a false attrition rate via its legislated eco tyranny; otherwise the in-service number would be even higher. I'll bet the third-world (maybe that us now) still uses thousands of the 2 cycle Detroit’s.

Yes, It was heartbreaking to see perfectly good DD engines with holes cut in the side of the block. Must have been nice to have a commercial boat and get a taxpayer subsidised repower.
