Oh man oh man Tim. Those MTU's are muey expensive to work on.

They're very reliable but the parts will kill you. I think a crank shaft is over 30K and a water pump is about 14K

$14k for a water pump? And I thought Volvo and cat were bad.

Cranks are not a common replacement item. At least not on engines I'm familiar with.

Horry shrit batman, $14K for a water pump. Lordy, I'll stick with my Detroits.

Expensive as it might be, still cheaper than owning airplanes. One annual can be 26,000 dollars. Hard to put a price on a good time. However, I had engine survey inspected by a third source, and he stated engines are in excellent condition, and since MTU purchased Detroit, parts are less expensive and more available than before. Also engines have been derated, so not working hard. And if my math works out the displacement vs horsepower is 1.55 to 1.

So far so good, I do not push them hard. 1800 turns gives me 23-24 knots, and that is good for me. I have the open bridge model, so 25 mph wind across the face feels fast, you cannot hear the radios, and you have to yell to each other across the bridge.

There are just some systems, and backup systems that I need to learn, which is why I am looking for an engine buddy.

Still a Hatt, engines, and all systems working, Life is Good.

Thanks to all,
Tim

Also, If any body remembers Steve with the 65 Outrageous65, his had the MTU's.

I tried to buy his boat, but my timing would not work with his deadline, so I missed out on his.

Worked out though, I wanted open bridge, his was enclosed.

Any way, talked to him again this morning, and he had very good success with his motors, and enjoyed them very much. Only time will tell on mine. They, like me, and the boat, are getting older each time I leave the dock. Taking here out again this weekend, maybe 60-70 miles out. Let us pray.

Have a great remaining of the week,
Tim

Can't imagine what that other boat looked like if you feel like you missed out vs what you have now. Wouldn't have thought hearing radios and having to yell would be an issue. You do have a windshield/screen, right? Can't remember.

You may have to venture into another venue to find MTU buddies.

Always great to hear from you Randy, I see you are living it up in Washington. Remember, If the nerves get pinched the ratio of Mount Gay rum and Coke, and I do mean Coke, not Pepsi, is 1/2 rum to 1/3 coke. The rest is ice.

Anyhow, I do have the Eisen Glass all around, but it is hotter than 40 hells off shore, and I always seem to troll with the wind. So all panels open, breeze in my face, and 10 bottles of water. I save the rum for the dock.

Be careful out there, and be sure to keep the post going. You seem to always have the most interesting travels.

And as you always say, " Post Pics".

Be good man,
Tim

This trip was "interesting" all right. As a friend of mine posted on Facebook, "So you fly out there to buy his boat, then don't buy the boat, you pay him nothing, and fly back with all his stuff. You are a bandit."

I just call that being a good negotiator. Didn't make the trip down to Palatka as planned, but hopefully I'll be in your neck of the woods before too long. Would love to yell at you over a 25 knot breeze with those MTU's providing some background music.

I have the room and the time. You are always welcome.

Be safe my friend.

Tim

Thanks, Tim. I posted some pics on the Bremerton thread, just for you. :)

As with any engine, keep the oil and filters clean. Get MTU down every year to adjust the valves and look them over. With reasonable care, those 396 series engines will run like a sewing machine for thousands and thousands of trouble free hours.
