37' CONVERTIBLE (1977 - 1982)
Changing the oil on 6-71TIs in a 1979 37c hat, the capitol gears and a NL generator. All use SAE 40. Last change lubriplate was used although i can't find it easily now. People seem to recommend Shell Rotella t. Where do you find it. Even Walmart has Rotella in 30wt but not 40wt. Quoted $68 for Vavoline in a 5gal bucket at NAPA. Tractor supply has a premium house brand for $44, I am in southeastern conn. thanks Hal
 
See if you can find Exxon XD-40. I get it in 5-gallon pails here at the fisherman's coop, and they also sell it bulk for cheaper (bring your own container)

Good stuff, arguably the best for Detroits, works fine for anything else that needs a straight 40 too.

Rotella T's been a good standard 2-stroke-rated oil for years. A real old standby. I'm sure Karl's right on about the Exxon, too. I've heard it talked about. As for finding Rotella, I buy mine at the local NAPA really cheaply.

There can be plenty of debate about which oil is best, which you may even see here on this thread. I'd start by asking a question -- of the marinas you're likely to frequent, which brands do they stock in the 1 gal. containers? I ask because no matter how well prepared you are with spares & jugs for all the things your boat needs, there will come a time when you're caught short on your own oil supply when fueling or getting bait, etc. At that time, you're going to want to know that the marina you're at has the oil you use. I don't know about you, but I HATE mixing brands of oil. I'd sooner take even an arguably lesser brand of oil but keep only that oil in the crankcase than go with the ultimate, but have it be kind of a rare bird with the local suppliers and be forced to mix something else in occasionally.

It's probably really hard to go wrong with any of the 2-stroke-rated oils, as they're all pretty high grade. They have to be in that demanding application. You can be that much more confident when you see the old school charter captains using Rotella, Delo 400, etc. Those boys put more hours on in a week than some of us do in a season.
 
Just be SURE it has a CF-II or later rating (the "II" is IMPORTANT!)

Delo 400 used to, and then they changed it. Woe be to you if you kept running it after that!
 
Someone published - I think it was Sky - some figures a while back showing that Exxon had the lowest ash levels of any of the CF2 oils. But Rotella is much easier to find in this area. The local marina store sells it for $48 a pail. Since they're only a hundred yards from my boat, it's hard to argue with the conveniance.
 
NAPA should be able to supply Rotella T-40. In Marathon it is in stock. In Wilmington, DE they were willing to order and get it with two hour notice. Also $48/pail.

I have used DD 1240D exclusively in all my DDs over many years. Is it better? I reallly don't know for sure but I do know that it has been speciallly formulated for DDs using DD specs. All of the others work, but who knows if they protect the engines as well. For the same reason I use only Powercool coolant/antifreeze which is formulated and sold through DD.

If you're comfortable with using general purpose diesel oils, remember that most of the over the road guys have 4 stroke diesel engines in their rigs. Oil is much cheaper than overhauls.

Have same boat with naturals. Use Rotella T SAE 40. NAPA in New London usually has it. Last time I bought it from Kellogg Marine, Had it the next day. Good Luck Jack
 
Anyone used Castrol Assuron? A local diesel shop ( machine shop and large engine rebuilder) recomended it to me. API CF2 rated.
 
For several years I have picked the brains of experts and old, sage folks about the best oil for diesels. The answer from every single person is Shell Rotella. I use that oil now in every diesel and gas engine. Our Crusaders in Unity get Shell Rotella and they look and run like new. That oil reminds me of the story about bottom cleaners. My son had a Fountain years ago and it is not acceptable to use bottom paint on these fast boats, (I think it's an ego thing). Needless to say the thing looked like a Cheapet at haulout. Several folks told me to use "Slimy Grimy". I asked the guy at the local marine store. He said he is out of it but would have some tommorrow. I asked if I could just buy a similar product. he said, "no, nothing can even come close to Slimy Grimy". Man, does that stuff clean a boat bottom. Now I always keep a spray bottle of this stuff around. My wife even uses it to get stains off my teashirts, and boy can I get crap on my shirts.

It was me. The Exxon XD3 40wt has a sulfated ash content of 0.8% and the Rotella has 1% sulfated ash. If you can find the Exxon, it is the best for Detroits, but the Shell is more readily available. I would also argue that Exxon/Mobil makes more oil that is branded by the manufacturers than any other oil company. If you buy CAT oil, for instance, you are getting Exxon-Mobil. Rotella has the best distribution in truck stops, etc, so you hear about it more, but the Exxon specs are better. Check it out for yourself. These specs are on their respective websites.

DDs oil IS Exxon/Mobil. Used to be Mobil's, now is Exxon's (since the Mobil product was subsumed into theirs)

At least that's how it was the last time I looked into it.
 
That's right. After the merger of Mobil and Exxon, many of the competing oils were discontinued. So the old Mobil Delvac was replaced by the Exxon XD3. I wasn't sure that DD oil was Exxon, so I didn't state that, but I thought that was probably the case since most engine manufactures use them.
 
Delo 400 has been replaced with DELO 100 for Detroits. If your into Standard Oil products for 2 Cycle Detroits, DELO-100 meets the specs.

I was compelled to get Valvoline SAE 40 at NAPA which meets the CF-2 spec, 0.8% ash, ect. at $65 a pail because I ran out of time. WM could get me Rotella at $48 but 1 week for delivery to the Mystic store. Next time I'll know.

Been using Texaco Ursa Extra Duty 40 weight for years with good results. Ash content is .76%.

WM has delo 100; in these parts (Seattle) it is in stock. Interesting-my 2006 catalog says $42/5 gal; my 2005 catalog says $50/5 gal. As most of you probably know, once you get to the store WM prices tend to be higher than what is listed in the catalog! I have been using delo 15W-40 in my truck (Duramax) but it looks like wallyworld wants me to switch to rotela.

I just bought a few 5 gallon pails of Delvac spec oil from Detroit Diesel in Ft. Lauderdale for $58. I find it easier to just buy the factory recommended oil from DD than to try and figure out which other oil meets the specs. I think it is an ExxonMobil oil and it says Delvac on the label too.

Looks like the Texaco may be the winner here. I looked at a boat that had a couple of gallons of Ursa on board, but I forget to check the spec on that one.
