  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
41' CONVERTBLE-Series I (1964 - 1971)
Looking for opinions on the motor mounts for a 58 YF we're looking at.

The pics attached are of the port side mounts wich look pretty decent, but aren't through-bolted. A follow-up message will include the starboard mounts, which look pretty rough to me.

Here are a few pics of the starboard mounts:

Stb look pretty bad but don't let it kill a good deal. Quality motor mounts like ACE are about $250 each on a 40 footer - probably a bit more on a 58.

On port side, is that a fuel line hanging loose against the mount? Whatever it is, it should be secured and chafe guarded.

From the pics I can't help wondering what the rest of the engine room(s) look like. Everything looks pretty rough to me. btw My boat is 27 years old.

The mount problem looks just like what I posted in the tech area on this site. You have a serious problem, it appears the rubber in mounts is delaminated. You need to check the alignment, and based on my history of trans failures, I would bet there is severe sagging problem, that if left unrepaired will lead to bearing and output shaft failure. Make certain there is no sign of oil coming out between the flange and shaft coupler, if there is, its sure indicator of bearing failure. The last time I checked the ace mounts are about $125 each. Good luck. Mike

There are a number of threads here about Allison gear failures and high costs due to motor mounts problems, like your boat has obviously had. A high torque nut there backs off and creates havoc. The issue is trying to determine if the trans are OK or are either about to go or have already failed (indicated orange or rusty oil or stains between the end flange and the couplers). Replacing/repairing those two gears will be upward of $20K. If that's how they cared for the motor mounts, I wonder what else is hidden under that red paint.

You could put a rider on the offer stating that the owner will pay to have the motor mounts replaced, the shafts realigned and the marine gears thoroughly checked and repaired, if necessary, by your contracted and controlled mechanics. I'd use the nearest DDA service center. DDA (Detroit Diesel Allison) made the engines and gears, even though they're separate companies now, and they have service centers you can locate on their website. If the owner balks at that, subtract a big enough chunk from the offer to cover it, or decide between taking the risk of that expense coming up soon versus running away from the deal. There are a lot of great Hatteras out there, so don't fall in love with just one until you play the field.

I second that. I looked at every boat (like mine) for sale worldwide on the net including discussing the individual boats with the listing brokers, and personally inspected more than I can remember before I selected the one I actually bought. Most were dogs when I looked close, and in my case (50 years experience, and I design seagoing equipment for a living) I knew what to look for.
Be patient.

#12- looks like what I have.

#3- the shims look like they are possible corroded, like mine are.

The problem with converting to the ACE mounts is the engine bed will certainly have to be re-engineered to accommodate them.

I may have found a guy here in Pensacola who might be able to help me with mine. According to him, the parts can be re-man’d. Obviously he’s done this before.

FWIW if your going to change mounts, go with PYI units, they have a 1" dia stud and are adjustable. I have made up a rear mount configuration, using 4"x6"x5/8" angle iron. You can bolt the PYI mount onto your existing stringer pad and to the trans with the new angle bracket. Same for the front mounts.

Mike, would you post pics of the set-up you described?
