Hatteras Model
43' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1978 - 1983)
I'm installing 2 new vhf radios on the boat. Do I need 2 MMSI numbers, or just 1?

Only one per vessel

Just one. MMSI nr is for the boat

You can get a free MMSI from BoatUS but it is only good for our USCG to recognize you in the United States. If you plan on going international (Canada, Bahamas) you need to get one from the FCC as I recall. Unfortunately this costs money and needs renewing every ten years. But it enters your boat into a worldwide information registry. You can also list your EPIRB and other transmitting devices.

AFAIK permanent installs all share the boat's number. If you have a handheld that may be used elsewhere, such as the tender, or you might bring along on another boat, it should have it's own number.

Also note, once the MMSI number is in the unit, it may require being sent back to the factory to remove the number. I found out the hard way, transposing two numbers.

That could be a problem. I have lesdixia.

At least that's what my wife told me.

By the way, did you hear about the dyslexic, agnostic, insomniac who lay awake every night wondering if there really is a dog?
