This is very low tech, but Groco has modified their design of the seal that sits between the raw water intake "cover plate" and the intake "body". When the cover plate is removed, the strainer is then removable.
Formerly this seal was a round "ring", with the center portion cutout, so that the outer ring was about 3/8-1/2" width. To install the ring, you had to do a manual positioning, while tightening the wing nut; you could get it wrong!
The minor change is that the seal is now a contiguous flat piece, with a hole cut in the center to accept/slide onto the threaded center bolt. This means that the seal sits perfectly positioned on the bolt and requires no manual positioning of the seal to get it positioned and centered correctly; it sits right in place by itself, so you can fritz with the cover plate, etc. So while this is a minor change, it means that installing the seal is now a) easier, b) will be of higher quality with fewer leaks (any?), always a concept. As we say in IT (CMM L2), the task is more "repeatable"- you get the same results every time.
That is my very low tech post. Sorry, no pics, but I no longer have an excuse, as I broke down and bought YADC (yet another digital camera)!
