Can’t believe it’s been 7 years already. I really dodged a bullet with the one since I could not move my boat which was about to be repowered. I got some damage but it was the only boat at my marina on or inside a tee head that survived. About a dozen were sunk and probably another two dozens totaled by insurers.
I was running an 84 Lazzara back then docked on the tee head. I waited to the last minute, Thursday after the 11PM advisory and we took off heading east to Hatchet Bay Eleuthera. We left at midnight and got there at about 1Pm. 22 kts all the way even in the Northwest channel at daylight which by that time was getting nasty. Had we waited till morning to leave we would not have been able to cross the stream.
Coming back 5 days later, the destruction was surprising considering the center or Irma passed about 80nm southwest of us… and by that time the storm had weakened significantly. The damage was not caused by the hurricane windfield but by embedded tornadoes in the bands. A frequent occurrence on the east side of a hurricane
We got a 5’ storm surge here but the keys and the west coast actually got a reverse surge where the water pulled out the bays. Pretty rare.
Pictures of the aftermaths… my 53, one of 3 late model sport fish that were left to sink and 60’ Chevy Lee 2 piers over totally destroyed with the house roof and FB ripped out

We, or more correctly, our boat rode out Irma at Plantation Yacht Harbor in Islamorada. As Pascal noted, Irma sucked the water out of Florida Bay to such an extent that we, that is our boat, sat so deep in the mud that when the water returned, the mud line was above our boot stripe. From pictures at the height of the storm, the line of boats along the bulwark looked as if they were ducking down to stay out of the wind.
