I installed a new Mastervolt Power Charger 12/40/3 in 2012 along with a new 8d battery. This is for my 12v electronics only. The battery only charges from the charger and 120v AC.

The other day I Checked the DC voltmeter and it read 9.3v. Disconnected the charger from battery and could only get 9.3v from charger output. I tried a portable charger on the battery and it came up to full charge.

I called Tech support at Mastervolt and described the problem. A couple of questions from the tech later and I had a new replacement charger coming from Mastervolt.

The charger shouldn't have failed but, I am glad Mastervolt stood behind their product.

I wish my experiences were as good! I bought a 24/40/3 just after we ought the boat to replace the sentry (transformer went bad) for the thruster and windlass. Bought a second idntical unit here in Stuart in 2013. Had to go into the shop within a year for "software reboot". A year later it went out agian, sent in for service and I was told "the unit is "all corroded and unrepairable". This is in my ER and replaced the original ferro unit that worked fine. Mastervolt would only sell me a new unit for $900.

I took the older unit from the bow and put it in the ER and now the LED read out on it doesn't work. Wish I had bought Charles units...

About 12 years ago we were cruising in the Exumas on our catamaran when our Mastervolt battery charger stopped working.

When we were stateside, I sent it back to Mastervolt and they sent me a new one (it was less than 2 years old). The technician I spoke with said that these units (due to the sensitive solid state circuitry) were very susceptible to nearby lightning strikes.

This makes me wonder about voltage spikes that could easily occur with our boats using multiple and changing sources of 110/220 AC and especially when hooked up to dockside power!

Would a good surge protector perhaps solve this problem. Entire house surge protection is now becoming more common.

Has anyone tried using surge protectors on their boats?

Jonathan
