Given how much money this country has spent maintaining other things with such historical significance, is amazes me they couldn't/wouldn't give this boat the care it deserved. If nothing else, they should have put the thing in a museum someplace. They being our government who spent tons of taxpayer dollars on that thing. It should have never been sold in the first place.

Don't blame this on anyone in Maryland. Its purely a DC thing. As of now it looks to me like she will be moving to Earl McMillen's yard in Rhode Island for rebuild. Earl's group did the yacht "Freedom" and she is stunning.

How sad. I've passed her twice on the water. Once in Florida in the mid-80s and again on Lake Michigan in the early 90's. At that time I think they were running her around trying to solicit donations to keep her up.

Given the boat was sold to a private owner, how can this be a DC thing?

It was another Jimmy Carter blunder ! The Sequioa was at the end of my dock in DC for many years, tied up in Washington channel . It actually looks to be in better shape now than it was then......Pat

Thanks for that, but the question still remains. Last time I checked, DC wasn't a LLC. Seriously, isn't that boat out of the hands of the U.S. government?

That was my understanding and the reason for my question. Lemme guess, DC financed it and there's still an outstanding loan?

No, I think this has been private money for years, now. It hasn't been owned by the government since Carter sold it off, IIRC.

I think the Sequoia is a Mathis Trumpy. They are beautiful old yachts, but very high maintenance. I hope someone saves it; as a piece of history it deserves preservation.

Eric, how would they move her? She doesn't look seaworthy to me.

My buddy did the varnish work on that boat last time it was done...about a decade ago, back when everybody had more money than sense. It's been going downhill ever since.

I saw it at Atlantic Yacht Basin several years ago. It was hauled (on a track) and they were replacing some planks and frames. I was surprised that the wood being used was just plain white oak boards and not mahogany or teak.

Regarding it's future, I hope that it ends up in the hands of the US Govt again where it should have stayed. Carter was not one of my favorite presidents and by selling her it only added to my discontent about him. Hard to believe that Carter was an Annapolis grad and Naval Officer.

Speaking of the money spent, we are paying for housing for some guy that visited all 57 states!

While we're discussing it, the USS Olympia and the SS United States could use some help too. What a shame that a microscopic fraction of the money we waste on useless cr@p could save these historically significant vessels for future generations to see America's capabilities and understand her history. Oh wait, that doesn't suit the agenda does it?

In the Bay Area the Patomic was seized from drug runners and while it sat in the harbor it sunk. A fund was developed to restore her. It took 4 years and 5 million dollars to bring her back to the glory days. She is now used for tours and bay trips. She is so beautiful cruising by. What a history.
