I currently have a Marquipt Tender-Lift with a hydraulic boom. The top edge of the hydraulic ram is rusting and I don't want to be in a situation where the pressure "blows out" of this weak spot. Marquipt is looking for $1,300 for this part and recommends hiring someone to install it.

Does anyone know of a less expensive source for this part and how difficult it is to replace?

I deal with hydraulics on a regular basis at our limestone quarry. You can have the ram rechromed and the unit resealed. We do our own seal kits, but send out the rams for rechroming. I usually use AIS Construction Equipment in Lansing, MI, but you may be able to find someone near you. Most large construction equipment dealers can do this. You might start by calling your local Cat dealer.

BTW, a pitted or rusty ram is unlikely to cause a catostrophic failure. What happens is that the rough surface will eat away at the seals in the head and it will start to leak oil.

The unit is "Marquipt White". The Ram's exterior surface is deteriorating. I'm either looking to repair the ram or replace the ram. Any idea if this is something that can be sanded, epoxy filled, primed and then painted if there is no sign of leaking hydraulic fluid?

If it is just the outside of the tube and not the ram itself, then you can sand and repaint. Just make sure the ram is not extended so you don't nick it or get any paint on the part that will be retracting back through the seals. You might remove it, sand blast it, and then put a good rust preventative primer on it and paint it.

Thank you. I hope that's all it needs.
