  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
54' EXTENDED DECKHOUSE (1989 - 1992)
I have a Marquip david on spincycle and the handheld remote operational control got water in it and now is not serviceable. i need to replace it but did not want ot call marquip becuase i feel the price might be way out there. it is the weather tight rubber faced water proof control box about 6" by 4" and has a push button for up and a button for down. any ideas where i could get one at a realistic price?

Try grainger.

Its basicly a pendant like you would use for a overhead bridge crane in a fab shop. You have to check the wiring tho. Some have a circuit board in the box that controls the braking to stop the travel quicker. I bypassed mine when I replaced mine on the Golo power winch.

Do you know what brand the winch is? Some, like the GOLO, require a $pecial $witch that interfaces with their braking system. I just went through that replacement cycle. You need to understand the wiring scheme before buying a 50 dollar switch that won't work. I ended up buying my new $witch from Cordem, the maker of the GOLO, but these guys were helpful:

nothing availalbe that is applicable on the grainger site, great tip though. it does seem to be a bit of a rare item.

Have you taken it apart yet? How do you know it needs to be replaced? Maybe there are just some corroded connections or a wire off. Open it up first and see if you can repair it before buying something else.

yes, i took it apart and found the inside to be corroded, i cleaned the connections and let it dry but when i put it back in use, it just puts the crane in the "up" motion and no down. i'm afaid it's unsafe to use anymore, and i don't want to damage the hydralics in the marquip davit.

So what is in there? Is it just two momentary switches or is there some sort of circuit board? If it's just switches, you may be able to find them and just replace the bad switch.

Unless there's a sealed and potted circuit board in there (where you can't actually see any of the components) you should be able to remove/replace any/all individual components in the unit - resistors, caps, diodes, transistor, etc.

Whatever they are, they are available from an electronics supply house like Mouser and it's just a matter of identifying the parts and replacing/resoldering the new ones in. You don't need to know anything about electronic circuits to do this - though some minor knowledge of the characteristics of a resistor, a diode, a capacitor, etc is helpful for troubleshooting. But one approach is to determine what's in there component-wise and just replace them all. Regardless of what's in there, it probably wouldn't cost you more than a few bucks unless a power transistor is involved. Some of those are in the 40 dollar range.

no circuit board guys, and your right it's just regular looking push button switches, but the weather tight box is old and cracked and the rubber button cover has seen better days.

See if you have a Graybar electrical supply close to you. If you can cut the cord take the box with you. they should be able to set you up with a rubber coated or fiberglass NEMA-4 or NEMA 12 rated box and pushbuttons with the proper contacts. The rating is called oiltite but is waterproof. Mark the wires and write it down before you start. Coat all the wire ends and terminals with dielectric grease after your done.
I would replace the rubber cord while your doing it.
