  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
46' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1981 - 1984)
Looking a switching boats found one with Man's but I have no experience with MAN's. Anybody have any experience with them? Rebuilt cost? Reliability parts etc

Word is maintenance and parts are expensive.

That being said it's all relative.

A few friends have them. Reliable but CRAZY expensive to maintain. One friends Man needed a new water pump, housing and all....5k, another got a quote to have his heat exchangers cleaned. 10k. Another bought a new to him Sea Ray 560 Sedan Bridge...maiden voyage, sensors shut an engine down...Man guys came in, from out of town, fixed it, no big issues, 18k....

Call a local MAN dealer and get a quote for routine services like 1000hrs and then compare with a Cat dealer for equivalent hp.

Make sure you sit down first

I have 8 cylinder 800 hp mechanicals. They have been reliable and have good HP to weight but as stated they have been expensive to maintain. There are repair alternatives (such as on the heat exchangers) that are not as expensive but a certified MAN mechanic will hand you hefty repair bills. I don't know about the 1050 10 cyl mechanicals in other boats but they were an option for my Cabo 47 and they had problems with smoking. Apparently they did not get the turbo/loading/fuel balance worked out.

Get a quote on the 2 year service, thats the one. Also, make sure that a mechanic takes off the heat exchanger end caps and inspects the orings and metal condition. If this is not in order its about $30K (again there are alternatives but a MAN mechanic probably will not offer them to you).

In terms of how much they cost per mile versus (for example) CAT 3412s or C18s or C32s.... MANs are not the best deal.

I have also heard that the scheduled services are very thorough and that if you do them as expected the engines are very reliable. But the cost is staggering.

I think I'd look for a boat with different engines.

Years ago they were referred to as Mangranades because they were considered highly stressed and would give the boat owner a major shock and concussion every time they were worked on by a Mann mechanic.

Thanks for the insite. All I have had in the the past are 8v92tta and have had issues getting parts like exhaust manifolds etc so I'm hoping to stay out of Detroit's. I would like to find a 52c or 55c already repowered with cats but haven't had much luck.

Depending on your budget you might be able to find a later 50 or 54 with Cats from the factory. some had 3406Es, or C18s, I think, and some had 3412s or C30s? They are supposed to be very good boats and very reliable engines.

The M in MAN stands for Money$$$$$$$$$$.

Before I bought my 55C, I was in love with a 50 Post with MANS. When the seller wouldn't pony up for the 1,000 hour service ($10K a side) I decided it was just lust.

Any idea how much it cost to reman 52 or 55 with c18's? To do the complete engine room right. I heard $200k is that a correct number?

Considering everything that has to come out plus the new paint job because you can't just re-power without redecorating and repainting, the figure is probably light.

Cat has caught up with Man for maintenance cost. Surveyed a pair of 3406E's in February.
1. 3000hr. service $15,000
2. Pull/clean H/E's $8,000(not part of 3000hr.)
3.all coolers/valve cover gaskets/pan gaskets/misc $15,000

Total $38,000 plus some parts if not re-usable!

Also, Cat now recommends servicing aftercoolers every 2 years max and replacing every 6 years. Adds a lot of expense depending which engines. Cost for C32's around $30,000.

Made me pause to consider other options. Makes a pair of DD 1271's look real good!

Catching up? Caterpillar has been turning cast iron into gold by painting it yellow since 1925. As somebody said before, it's all relative. One you get past around 800 HP orders of magnitude start to kick in.

I don't have any experience with 3406 but have put on over 3000 hrs on a pair of 1400hp 3412Es which now have 5300hrs

For what I recall the 3000 hours service was about $5k for both including pulling and cleaning the aftercoolers

There is no way it can cost $8k to pull AC on the smaller 3406... that would be 50 or 60 hours of labor On the 3412Es it was less a day to pull and less than a day to reinstall

Yes cat had a design flaw with the original 1650hp C32 aftercooler which resulted in some failures Last year When I moved to the 84 lazzara I m running now we decided to upgrade them just to be safe. It was indeed a $30k job but To put things in perspective that s on $3M boat... the new design is supposed to be much better and I doubt we ll be replacing them in 6 years. It took the mechanic less than 2 days to replace both

Some dealers charge ridiculous amounts. When we did the aftercoolers last year I had the cat dealer do the oil change. Never again. It was about $4k. I just did one today on the same C32s. Less than $1000 for 40 gallons of oil and all filters and it took me 6 hours.

Something isn't right with these numbers

And yes 12V71s are nice but they won't put out 1650hp like the C32 :)

I have owned a pair of 820s since 2007. They have been very reliable but I do the 1000 hr service every 2-3 years and it averages about 16,000. The word on the 1050s is the valves had issues and they would come apart and wipe out cylinders. The 1050s do not have same good reputation for longevity like the 820s do. the raw water pump new is 1200. An intercooler was 8000. One bank of injector lines 600. I believe the displacement of the 820s is 1100 cubic inches so from that standpoint it is not highly stressed. When I get another boat I would prefer the cats but would not hesitate to buy a man powered boat.

Pascal , what is the oil change interval on those C32's ? I believe it's much longer than Detroits.....Pat

Pascal, those numbers came from Cat in the Tampa area. Be happy to share with you if you want. The aftercoolers were part of the 3000hr cost. The heat exchangers were not, it was $4000 each to R&R and clean. They were the plate type HE's same as 3412E's. Had 3412E's and agree with you, could change oil myself for about $900. Several years ago you could get Cat work at a much more reasonable price. It is good to use Cat because of warranty on parts and labor. but at a big premium cost now. I realize the DD 1271 will not pump out the HP like those big Cats, but speed is not a priority as when fishing a lot. Several years ago, Cat maintenance was a real advantage over Man and Mtu. Made a mistake on that post and will edit, the total was $38k not $40k.

Things changed when they started painting their yacht motors white! Even the 800hp 3406e's and C15 are expensive to maintain now. Cat 12cyl are different $$ ball game, great motors but expensive, same as all high performance diesels nowadays.
