May set record for oldest, fastest to ever sail around the world alone

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -
A St. Augustine man finally set sail for his record-breaking sail around the world Monday morning.

Dr. Stanley Paris has tried to set sail since Saturday but high seas kept delaying the voyage.

Monday morning, Paris will get underway with his hope to set a record as the oldest and fastest to ever make the trip alone.

76-year-old New Zealander, Dr. Stanley Paris has done this before, only this time, he'll be doing it solo.

Paris has been preparing for this trip for four years now.. he even designed his vessel-the Kiwi Spirit, which will hopefully be his home for the next 130 days.

After a two-day weather delay, Paris will board his 63-foot sailboat and take off Monday morning, in hopes of establishing a new record: St. Augustine to St. Augustine around the world solo, unassisted and non-stop.

"Being alone with somebody else for 130 days that could be worse than being by yourself for that period of time. when you have a house guest, how many days do you really want them, 3, 4," Dr. Paris said jokingly.

Dr. Paris had been preparing for this trip for four years and designed his own boat. It has one less watertight bulkhead than the titanic and a life raft on deck.

"Pretty much everything you see in this area, I hope never to use," said Dr. Paris.
Down below are medical supplies, survival suits, reserve pumps and dive gear. He has enough food to get him through the trip and can have two drinks per day, which he said will help him get home on time.

"You get 30 drinks out of one scotch bottle, 18 out of a bottle of rum and only 4 out of wine. So yes, considering weight and volume for a return, it's mainly scotch and rum," said Dr. Paris.

Dr. Paris also plans on doing it green. Throughout his trip he won't turn on the engine or the generator. He'll shower about once a week and sleep for just 45 minutes at a time because he'll have to trim the sails to make sure he doesn't get off course or hit anything.

"I could strike an iceberg, a small one you wouldn't see, the size of a living room, only a foot and a half would be above the water, a log or a container," said Dr. Paris.

Dr. Paris recently retired. He said this trip will give him a lot of time to think about what he'll do with the rest of his life. He has a bucket list and this is one thing on it, but there are about nine other things he still wants to scratch off. That's in addition to what he's already accomplished, like an Ironman in Hawaii, a swim across the English Channel and a sail around the world already once with friends.

"Fear of failure stops you from doing so many things in life and i don't have that fear," said Dr. Paris.

You can track Dr. Paris online while he's sailing. Just go to stanleyparis.com it tells you exactly where he is and how fast he's going.

Should be interesting. I like adventure and this is right up my alley.

I wish him the best.

I am not a sailboat fan... but did follow the 16 yr old who was 'supposed' to sail around the world a few years ago... but will follow him..... HOPING he can do it...

At his age, I hope he has the stamina and health to make this trip.

I know several 70's yr old sailing people. They seem to be healthy and fit as a fiddle. If you think about it it all makes sense. Sailors are thrifty. They also travel long distances.

1. They dont eat out much. No taco bell, Macdonlds etc.
2. They drink water and not sugar drinks.
3. They get plenty of exercise cranking sails up and wrestling dinghy/motors.
4. If they travel in the ocean, they have good core muscle tone walking around on a bouncing boat.
5. The hard core, mooring/anchoring out people need to carry all supplies via walking/bicycle/dinghy.
6. Stay mentally focused and alert for long periods of time sailing/navigating.
7. Stay flexible by working on projects.

I'm sure everybody can relate to these people. A body in motion stays in motion. Sailors stay in motion mentally and physically. Also they arent tempted to eat out constantly eating foods that are bad for us. Of course this applies to real sailors that sail long distances and anchor out all the time. We've all seen those sail boats motoring down the ICW and stopping at all the marinas. I'm not talking about those motor sailors. My hat goes off to these die hard sailors who make long passages and stay in shape. Maybe one day I can do it.

With all the modern advancements in navigation, electronics even a 14 yo girl can do it. Well almost.

Are you kidding me? All this electronic stuff gives me fits !! I just bought a Gopro camera with the instruction book I need a magnafying glass to read it. I'd rather be under the boat scrapping barnicles than downloading electronic charts to my Ipad. Maybe I need a 14 yr old girl to show me how its done. Either way, it challenges your mind and is better than just sitting on a couch watching the news. These sailors are making news.

It's a huge undertaking at any age. His adventure is worth following, I wish him well, and pray he succeeds. Good luck DOC!

I read on the cruising and sailing forum that you can read blogs and what he eats, etc. posted regularly. I cant see that he has posted anything. I have clicked on everything, including blog, and cant see where he has posted new stuff. Well, at least you can see whee he is located from some tracker thingy. Am I missing something?

He just posted Blog # 1. Thats got to be a relaxing ride. That is compared with the white knuckle ride down the ICW through Hells Gate etc.

His 3rd blog is on how he almost got run over by a ship............. He's gonna have his hands full on this trip...But love reading it
