Gentlemen, I am working with a good boat electrician who has determined that the GFI separate breaker segment of the “Ships Service 1” power inlet leg has an internal short and must be replaced. YES I have checked with Sams and they are trying to find it but so far no luck. Does ANYONE know where I might source a new main breaker for a 1980 53MY!

Try Wards Marine Electrics in FTL. Best source for anything electrical

This is common with those. You can either bypass the white ground fault breaker or use a ground fault plug in place of it at the beginning of each circuit with a plug. Don't need them for other machinery.

I heard before that Wards will rebuild those breakers too. Might try them as stated above.

Is this a GFI that protects the entire boat? I have never seen one like this before. Does anyone know if it operates the same way as a modern GFCI/ELCI or does it use some method other than unbalanced current on the conductors?

The late 70's/early 80's had GFIC breakers that protected individual Ships Service panels.

Mid-late 80's had GFCI breakers only on each "lights & plugs" circuit.
