  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
Has anyone installed a magnum inverter in the engine room. Manual says 77 Deg. F max but I don't have a lot of alternate locations. I was hoping to just replace the old charger and use the same location which is on the forward bulkhead of the ER. I would think that today's electronics could withstand higher temps and I may just experience some loss of efficiency.

Mine (MS4024) was in the generator room. It got pretty hot in there, but the inverter was in the charge mode when the genset was running. Still on a summer day without the genny running it could get to 90 degrees. i never noticed any effect, and the inverter got very heavy use in the almost 7 years I had it, since we spent a bunch of time at anchor and on moorings with the genset getting rum 4 to 8 hours a day, more in summer or very cold weather.

I've had my 3000 watt freedom inverter installed in my engine room for 4 years now with no ill effects. It's right in back of my port 6v92 and next to my genset on the back engine room wall. It gets plenty hot back there in excess of 100*. It wasn't my first choice for location however it's worked flawlessly since installation. So my answer is yes you can mount it there. However I'm sure the manual tells you that you shouldn't. It may also have adverse effects on your warrentty if they knew where you mounted it.

You have a 43 DC, like me. How about installing it behind the fridge?

No space behind my fridge. To starboard of the fridge is the CO2 canister.

On my 1979 43DC my inverter is installed in the compartment under the dinette above the water tank, suspended from the floor framing on a shelf.

On my 43DC inverter is installed on the starboard engine room bulkhead behind the fridge, about 2 feet towards starboard hull from the original Sentry battery charger location. No problems in 5 years with Xantrex 2000 watt sine wave inverter. There is tons of space between fridge and that CO2 canister if you did want to pull fridge out to get in there, well ventilated too.

My Xantrex ms2000 is mounted low and against the rear engine room bulkhead in the engine room. The batteries are on just the opposite side of the bulkhead. Shortest runs I was able to achieve. I think shorter battery cables or put another way, adequate ampacity, is more important than absolute temps it might see.

If the magnum is like the Victron, the capacity is a function of temperature. Victron provides that information on it's website. The Victron also has over temperature protection. Most modern electronics and insulation can tolerate ER temperatures.

Not in the ER, but I installed mine under a berth with almost no ventilation. I was worried that it would overheat [as did a Xantrex that I had on a previous boat]. However, so far [knock wood] no problems, even with 90+ heat that makes the cabin where this berth is located almost unbearable.

I think I'm going with the ER bulkhead behind the fridge. Easy access and close to battery switches. Thanks all...
