  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
41' CONVERTBLE-Series I (1964 - 1971)
Shouldn't have been talking while working on this one....

I pulled the macerator pump apart to replace the studs that broke when it was pulled out, and now I can't figure out where things go.....

In the attached pic, the circled bruch holder has a place to put a wire, in fact, that's where the brush wire is, BUT, the stud, which I'm sure I removed a wire from now has no wire.....

The other thing that seems strange upon re-assembly is that the spring on the brush holder, will touch the stud, though not in a way that it obviously should...in other words, it might be OK or not, and I can't tell.

Is there anyone that has been into the guts of one of these pumps that can shed some light on the subject?

This is the last thing I am trying to finish tonight, before heading back to Atlanta......figures, eh?

Is that the correct stud or should it be a frame ground?? ws

A thought I had as well, but the old stud did have an isulator. The yellow wire runs to that stud. I would have figured the black to got to frame if anything, but there is a 3rd location for the bonding wire, rather than a negateive ground....

now now now!!! The yellow is the 32vdc ground and the green is for bonding--at least mine are. The green "may" carry the ground or may not. Better ask Trojan Bill about this one! ws

It's a Galley Maid head Pump? Don't guess and then connect it. Just call Ernie at Galley Maid. He can reassemble one of these in his sleep, and you can e-mail him the picture(s).

This one is a Raz. I'll give them a call in the AM and see what I can get worked out. I was hoping to get it together tonight so I could get an early start back toward Atlanta in the AM.

I can't see all the wiring connections clearly, but almost certainly all the internal wiring (andbrushes and holders) are insulated from the motor case. (If not, stray currents are too risky.)

If the brush holders are insulated from the case, then a spring contacting the holder is normal and ok. I would expect both brush holders and their studs to be equally connected/insulated..can you use the other brush and holder as a reference??

The brush holders are indeed insulated from the case. There is an insulation band that is anchored by the stud and the brush holder.

I thought I had disconnected the brush wire from the stud on this side, which seems to make sense as the stud offers the only connection point for a wire external to the case....and if it's insulated, the power goes just to the brush...sounds OK, but the stud is so close to the spring, that I know it's going to occasionally make contact with the brush holder, which didn't strike me as right. Not necessarily an issue as it's not a 'short', but it just didn't look right and got me concerned that I had missed something upon dis-assembly.

The other brush, is wired to one end of the field, and the other stud (black wire) to the other end of the field. I'm thinking the brush holder in question has a mounting point for a wire simply so they have one "part number" instead of two.

I'm going to try and confirm this with Raz, and hopefully, I won't let all of the smoke out of the motor when I try it!
