I searched the forum for previous discussion on this topic but came up empty.

I was recently told by a knowledgeable friend that if lube oil temperature is 185F or higher, rings do not suffer carbon deposits etc. So I checked mine (6V92TA 425 hp 160F thermostats) at the spin on filters and found 185F on one and 190F on the other. Any comments from the forum? My only data point was from a couple of years ago when I had to rebuild the starboard engine due to a coolant leak in a head seal. None of the pistons showed carbon build up after near 2000 hours at 1000-1100 rpm with ocasional run up to 2000 rpm.

PS, thermostats were since changed to 170 degrees F.

Yeah -- you tore one engine apart for a not-operationally-caused problem and found no problems attributable to the way you were operating the engine. Keep doing what you're doing; you have the best evidence for your particular operating regime, which is an actual internal inspection of the actual engine under your actual usage pattern with 2,000 hours on the clock. :D

I think you are ok.

I am constantly checking my ER with the IR gun.

I get different oil temps at the filter for both engines.

Temps seem to vairy some times as much as 10' per engine.

My temps at the Oil filter fitting are sometimes as high as 190.

but the heads dont seem to get hotter that 130-140 (i think, im goning to check the logs next time im on the boat)

One of my engines seems to smoke a little more than the other one on cold start ups in colder weather. It turns out that the engine with a little more smoke has a block heater that is 10-15 degrees colder that the no smoke engine.....
