Low temp on port engine

I noticed the other day that my port engine (8-92's) was operating at 155 degrees at 1850 RPM's while my starboard engine was at 175. I shot several parts of the port engine with my IR temp gun and it seemed to be similar to the starboard.

I understand that since there are 4 thermostats on the engine, if one were stuck open, it would be compensated by the other 3. I would think that if I was running cool, there would be some excess smoke off the transom. There was none. I'm thinking a faulty gauge...any other thoughts on this???

Where are there FOUR thermostats on one engine? I am about to replace mine, and I only bought one for each engine (8-92s).

Two thermostats in those engines, one in each elbow (inlet and outlet.) Both should be replaced if you replace either AND there's a seal up in the top of the tower that most people don't change but you really do need to if its been more than 10 years or so. It deteriorates and affects the thermostat's ability to properly direct coolant.

DDs have a bypass cooling system; when the system is under the thermostat temperature both thermostats are closed and coolant recirculates in the engine without going through the heat exchanger. When the temperature rises both thermostats open and simultaneously shut off the recirculation flow while redirecting it through the H/E.

You should be able to feel that much of a temp difference by hand....

or reverse the temp gauge sender wires (change port/stbd) and see what they read...

or easiest and most accurate of all: read both engine temps with an IR gun...
