Loose prop

A loose prop has galled the shaft. My initial thought is replace it. From looking at the picture the prop shop believes it is not worth playing with. It's a 1.5 inch shaft coupled to a 315 HP 6bta. Cost is not bad $700 for the part. Just wondering what opinions the forum may have.

Clean it up and dye penetrent it for cracks.

The prop was actually loose. The prop shop was concerned more with the black spots. Thought is they may cause a problem. Gotta admit this is not an area I know much about. Don't want to replace it unless there is good reason too.

Whatever caused it it needs to be replaced

I'm no expert, but that would not stay on my boat. Frankly, I'd be worried about the inside of the prop hub as well.

Until you polish it up and get it clean, we don't know what the heck we are looking at.

$700 sounds extremely cheap for a shaft. If that's all it cost why even consider anything other than replacement? You're going to have to pull it to fix it so why not pull it and send it to a good prop shop to evaluate? Hard to say just from the pics but if it needs to be repaired I'd opt for a new one for only $700. I'd bet it would cost at least half that just to have it cleaned, polished and trued aside from any repairs.

And then you'd keep worrying about it every time you put that side in gear...... I'd get a new one, I would.

Thanks for all the input. After cleaning it up there is no doubt it's bad. The good news it came off the coupler with little effort.
