  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1978 - 1983)
I am researching the possibility of buying a classic 61 MY. Currently there are 18 available on YW from $189k-$495k. Does anyone here have any insight into what these boats are actually selling for? It seems they are generally much higher priced than the 58's. I assume that is a function of their rarity? Or, are they more desirable from a layout perspective?

There is a 61 in san diego that was sale for a while and dropped to 295 and sold for 200k. It was reported to have been flipped after a few months and re sold for 270 after some cosmetic work....

Galley up? I had noticed a large price difference between 58's with galley up vs 58's with galley down. Sometimes 50-100k difference. I have an extended 61 and we love the galley up and would not have it any other way. Might not be as important for those who have crew and cooks on board that do the prep and serve but on our boat that is us doing the work and we like being among others while we do the work.

Agreed. Galley up seems more desirable. There are a couple of 58 galley up boats for sale now that are reasonably priced. I am looking at 2 in particular. Obviously engine hours is a big factor in the prices too. I am still curious what these boats are actually selling for versus asking price...???

Goes to show how much this is a personal preference. My wife is an excellent cook and she absolutely wanted a galley down. For one thing she has a very messy style of cooking, and while she likes a little company while she cooks, not a whole crowd, and given our beam and dinette that works out fine. We had a very very nice 61MY on our final short list, but the layout alone ultimately eliminated it. About the only ergonomics we liked more was the ladder from lower helm to upper. Besides galley issues, I did not like the pilot house set up, especially visibility, no walk around decks which we both treasure for many reasons, and most of all we absolutely love the separated encloseable aft deck which is by far the most used "room" on the boat.

At the time we were looking, 5 1/2 years ago, general condition of the boat had far more to do with price than one layout vs another. I actually paid more for my 56 than I could have bought that 61 (and another for that matter) or as would have been the case with a couple of Series II 58's that were in the running. Haven't regretted it for a minute, quite the contrary.

So you have to spend a lot of time thinking through how a boat will work for YOU, then compare apples-to-apples.

I just checked soldboats.com for you, in 2012 three 61's have been reported sold, 1982 cpmy for $230,000 in FL, a 1981 cpmy in CA for $244,000 and a 1981 my in CA for $350,000.
There are no penalties for reporting a false selling price from Yacht World, these seem to be possibly accurate. This means that that like all 20 year old boats, condition is everything.

All very good information...Thanks. YB Guy-can you look up 56 MY's on sold boats, that is my second choice. Curious what these wide beam 56's are selling for. Thanks.

If you go to Denison Yacht sales web site they post the past quarters listing and sold price into on all models of many boat brands. Soldboats.com is a good one but Denison's site has many boats listed that don't appear for some reason on soldboats site. They show eight 61s sold in the last year plus from a low of $175k to a high of $340k. Most of them were in the $200 to $250k range. Good luck with the search!

I'm not sure from what source Denison gathers their sold data. I just reviewed what they have for Q1 and Q3 Hatteras sold boats. They are totally missing Hatteras sales that I am aware of, some because I had personal involvement. These are sales that are reported on soldboats.com but not on their list.

Sounds like you need a good buyer's broker. There are a few here on this site.
