Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
Hi All. Some of you all know me but in case you don't...the miracle of all miracles occurred the other week and we actually/finally sold our silverton sedan. As such, we're actively in the market for our next ride. We're looking at several options and the final boat we buy is going to be a functon of what kind of boating we decide we want to do next but one of the boats on our possible options is the 53 classic or ED. If you've got one for sale that is a great price and you're ready to sell let us know. We'd also possibly consider a 58 or YF. We may not end up with a 53 hatt but I invite you to tempt us! :D

Thanks!

If you are planning on keeping that at Lanier, is there a travel lift that will haul such a beast - remember these are much heavier than the non-Hatteras 50-something foot boats you see on Lanier. So, before you fall in love with one, be sure you can get her back out of the water.

When I was on Lanier, I looked into this and while I could have slid her off of a trailer into the water, no one could lift her out and no one would entertain the idea of using a trailer to bring her out of the water. Can't say that I blame them. Plus, the truck haul from the sea to Lanier was over $25,000 - it's probably more these days.

Just something to consider....

Boy if that doesn't beg the question of moving marinas...

No, if we bought a 53 it would not be going to Lanier. We're toying with the idea of living aboard for a year or so while the kids are still small and doing the great loop or at least part of it. If we owned a 53 hatt, the closest it would come to Lanier would be Chattanooga! :)

We'd really prefer the ED layout over the "classic" but we're not in the upper spectrum of the price range. :)

We're looking at some other makes/models as well and not tied to any one make/model but the 53 is a nice boat and one we could work with nicely.

Hi

Excellent price, 90% restored and a new survey 12/09. Contact me if intrested for pics and specs @ capt.cbc@gmail.com
Good Luck

Tony, if you're planning to do the Loop with this boat, then the classic may be a better fit over the ED. Why? Because you will get walk around decks with the classic that you won't with the ED. Walk arounds are very useful when going through locks and when tying up in unfamiliar marinas on a routine basis. My 58does not have the walk around decks and it's a royal pain sometimes - mostly when having to put out fenders, especially the big heavy ball fenders. Without the walk around, all I have it a little toe ledge that I have to carefully venture out onto with the fender in one hand and holding onto the railing with the other. Then, I have to try to manage to tie the fender to the rail with one hand and my knee. I'd hate to have to do that on a regular basis. Just something to consider.

Actually, I think the ED is easier because of the open little back deck. The side decks are nice the MY, but to handle stern lines or fend off you have to move furniture and slide windows open or roll up curtains to do so. I always wanted the MY and I have taken trips on a couple of them. Now that I own the ED, I can really see the differences in ease of docking, etc.

One other thing I notice is that the ED has a stern cleat that is outside of the aft enclosure. You don't have to run a line through a chock to tie it off as you do on the MY. This can come in handy.

Congratulations on the sale of your Silverton. We owned a 1992 35' Luhrs before our Hatteras YF.

Ours is looking for a new owner now. If you want to take a look you can get the full specs on our website:
