Looking at 53 C

My 41c is for sale. Didn’t get her sold in time to find a Replacement this fall so I ran her to Marathon Fl from NC for the winter. Have three different buyers flying down to look and pretty confident one will defiantly buy her. Wife and I are looking at 53c’s with three staterooms so daughters and grand kids can stay with us when we travel. It’s the only reason for selling my 41 which is the old Hambone IV. Financially 53c with 892’s are in my price range although repowered would be my choice. Cost to repower with QSM 11’s makes it a great boat but never see my money back or even close. So what’s the opinion do I buy with 892’s for a very reasonable price and just maintain the 892’s and rebuild as needed or buy one that’s been repowered and justify increased cost with speed and less fuel burn?Plan to put about 200 hours per year.Oh yes can anyone tell me what to expect from 735 HP 892’s as far as realistic cruise speed and GPH at cruise. Plan to run at 1950 rpm

I own a 79 53c and love it. I have 8v92s 650hp I am pretty sure they never came with 735s (735hp was a single turbo, 650hp is a twin dry turbos, 750hp is twin wet turbo) 650hp to 735hp seems to be all the difference between longevity on 650s is 8000-10000hr and 735s are 4000-5000hr. with that being said i would stay away from anything over 650hp in a 8V92. My boat cruises at about 20mph at 1900rpm full load full of fuel burning about 55gph wide open is about 27mph at 2280rpm. My engines have about 4000hr on them since complete rebuild about 10 years ago.

200 hours a year it will take 10 years to hit 2000 hours even worn out Detroit s will shoulder on that long. And the difference in fuel burn when you look at gallons to the mile isn't all that great.the 92 series are great engines but are far less forgiving than 71 series to mishandling poor maintance and abuse. A few back in the 90's were re powered with 60 series detroits which was a great combination. One of my charter captain friends repowered his 53 with them and it made a reliable charter boat

Thanks for the info. Seems the majority of 53’s for sale with 892’s mostly list 735 HP. And if no tower claim 24 knots cruise. Think I was very conservative on yearly hours with 350 being more realistic. I am slightly confused regarding rebuild frequency. Thought Detroit’s when you get up into the higher horse power all scheduled rebuilds at 2000. Getting more hours than that between rebuilds would help me justify saving some money on on purchase with newer technologie engines. I recall owning a 42 Bertram with 692’s 475 hp and previous owner had full rebuilds done at 1900 hours.

Depends how their run and maintained.

Ive heard of 3500 hours on 671 TIB at 485 that was just starting to get one cylinder below the others in compression. They were run at cruise on plane but well maintained.

Ive also heard of 200 hours on a rebuild and a failure causes a rebuild.

If you're interested in a 20ish knot cruise speed try to find one that's been repowered, 8v92 just doesn't hold up very well. If you're planning on hull speed cruising there's no problem with 892.

I have not been looking but you about right unless you want to believe some BS.... There is a 53 c in Oriental Hiding from the Bank. It is at the sailboat mariner in the far corner backed in
I have heard 60,000 would take it home if you can get it home. There is a 54 called blank check in Myrtle beach SC been for sale a while not a bad boat. I have been on it. There is a 53 in wilmington i have not been on it but have seen it from the dock its got cunnins in it blue hull FASTTRACK
might want to look it may be on yacht world. They are not hard to find but hard to pull the triger...

Your absolutely correct and I would have if my boat was sold but couldn’t be a two boat owner. Somebody got a beautiful boat with all of the right stuff.
